Chapter 2001
As gunshots rang out, the first group charged forth on horseback.
Then a masked man also pursued them! Hannah had initially thought the chase would ensnare only a few, but three were eliminated before even completing half the circuit.
This is too easy, she mused.
The riding skills of those trailing were exceptional, swiftly catching up to the front runners.
However, those caught were not just overtaken.
They were eliminated outright.
Hannahs face grew increasingly grave as the race progressed.
The pursuer intensified his aggression, bumping into competitors horses and at them with a lashing whip.
Several riders nearly lost control and tumbled from their mountsa fall at such speed could be catastrophic.
Is that man insane? Hannah exclaimed.
Its a ruthless chase.
If we cant hold our ground, were at their mercy, she cursed.
Maloney, observing the chaos, expressed his shock at the unfolding events.
As they neared the final stretch, only three riders remained in the lead, quickly approaching the finish Line.
It seemed likely these three would maintain their lead until the end.
However, just before crossing the finish line, the aggressor lashed his whip, striking the lead rider, who screamed, lost grip on the reins, and fell heavily to the ground.
The aggressive rider then crossed the finish line, reined in his horse, and stowed his whip.
The crowd was visibly shocked by the brutality of the act, unprepared for such ruthless competition.
Although she couldnt make out the specific comments from the spectators, Hannah could see the general dismay.
Frowning deeply, she commented, This exemplifies the Lyons familys deplorable nature.
They gamble with human lives as if theyre nothing.
Despicable! Maloney responded, This is typical for them.
When have the wealthy ever truly valued human life? Hannah retorted, looking at him, Youre wealthy too.
I may be wealthy, but I dont share their cruel indulgences.
Its not too late to back out now.
Why not withdraw before you enter the racecourse? As he finished speaking, Hannah shook her head firmly.
Withdrawing now would only show fear.
That would be a real disgrace.
Inside the racecourse, as announcements for the second group echoed through the speakers, Hannah and Maloney led their horses onto the track.
From the stands, Peterson glanced at Remington and ventured, Remington, care to wager on whether Hannah will cross the finish line successfully?novelbin
