What Separates Me and You

Chapter 495 You Are Cursed

Josephine's movements paused, and she looked at Conrad in astonishment. "What did you say?"

Conrad was somewhat surprised by her reaction. "You didn't know?"

"I didn't know." Josephine furrowed her brows. Lewis was still blabbering about official business and bargaining with her yesterday.

Yet he invested in the company right away.

That meant the company's finances were temporarily stabilized. They could resume operations in three months and would no longer go bankrupt. Seth's advice was of no use.

No wonder Lewis wasn't angry yesterday. No matter how many suggestions Seth gave, Lewis could disregard them.

Being wealthy really had its advantages.

Conrad was delighted. He knew it was all thanks to Josephine. Hence, he smiled at her graciously.

Josephine returned the container to him and got into the bodyguard's car.

She didn't want to deal with company matters. She decided to let Lewis be. After all, she was just a nominal boss. Lewis was the real helm of the Moss Corporation.

Whether they went bankrupt or continued operations, it was up to him.

Josephine arrived at the hospital. Avery was undergoing rehabilitation training with her crutches. Walking was still difficult.

"Josephine, you're here." Avery struggled to approach Josephine in her crutches.

Josephine wanted to help her, but Avery declined. "Don't touch me. I want to do this on my own. The doctors said recovery depends on willpower. As long as I persist, I'll get better sooner."

Hearing that, Josephine retracted her hand. "Alright then, take it slow."

Avery chuckled. "Don't worry. I've been walking for half an hour. At this rate, I believe I'll be skipping around in another half month."

"I think you've said that before."

"Really? Well, it doesn't matter. I feel like I'm getting better." Avery waved her hand dismissively and continued to move around the room with her crutches.

Josephine watched her unsteady steps. Fearing Avery might fall, she silently followed behind her.

After another half hour of walking, Avery was exhausted. She let Josephine help her to the sofa.

Avery twisted open a bottle of mineral water. Before she could take a sip, she remembered something and turned to Josephine. "Josephine, how have you been lately?"

"I'm good."

Noticing that Avery's hand was still weak, Josephine held onto her arm and helped her drink the water.

Avery drank about half of the bottle. Josephine took it from her to screw the cap back on.

Avery studied Josephine, her voice lowering. "So, how's it going between you and that je—I mean, Lewis? You depended on him so much when you couldn't speak, and you couldn't leave him when you lost your memory. Now you seem completely back to normal. You ..."

Avery's expression turned complicated. "You still can't let go of him? What's so special about him?"

"Avery, I don't know how to explain to you." Josephine lowered her gaze. It wasn't that she couldn't let Lewis go, but Lewis wasn't letting her go.

Yet Josephine dared not tell Avery the truth. She was afraid that history might repeat itself. Avery barely survived, and they were lucky enough to be able to have this conversation.

If Avery found out the truth, given her temperament, she would try every means to help Josephine leave. Lewis was different now. Nobody was there to control him now.

When Robert and Kiran were still alive, Lewis nearly killed Quintin when he tried to take Josephine away-let alone now.

Therefore, the best solution was to keep her friends from getting involved again.

After she left, it wouldn't implicate Avery either.

"Just tell me everything. By the way, now that you're back to normal, I never had the chance to ask you about the baby. Don't tell me he's behind what happened to your baby."

Josephine's face turned pale when she heard the word baby. Her heart tightened as if an invisible hand was gripping it. She felt suffocated.

Josephine instinctively placed her hand on her lower abdomen. She had almost forgotten she was pregnant twice.

Lewis forced her to get an abortion the first time. The second time ...

Although it wasn't entirely his fault the second time, she had texted him for help while he was celebrating Sierra's birthday.

She was desperate back then and hoped that he would come through. She had hoped he would come to save the child for old times' sake.

After all, it was his own flesh and blood.

However, he didn't come. He didn't ask about the baby.

Past memories surged up, and the ingrained sorrow overwhelmed Josephine again.

Seeing Josephine's complexion growing paler, Avery grabbed her hand. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked. Josephine, don't be upset. You'll have another chance to have a child."

Josephine struggled to suppress her emotions and managed a forced smile. "It's okay. It's all in the past.'

"Was it really him?"

Josephine shook her head. "No, it wasn't him."

She didn't know whether to blame him for this matter. After all, she didn't tell him about the baby. She was worried he would take Nancy's side as he did the first time. She couldn't fathom Lewis' intentions, so she had never dared to tell him.

Josephine said softly, "I'm not destined to become the baby's mother."

Avery looked at her with compassion. She felt the urge to tear Lewis apart.

If one day she didn't want to live anymore, the first thing she would do was take Lewis down with her!

Too bad Tyler kept reminding her not to provoke Lewis and act recklessly for the Green family's sake. She didn't have any solutions now either.

"You're still speaking up for him. I'm starting to suspect that he has put a curse on you. Maybe I should find an exorcist to expel the evil spirits in your body."

Josephine found her words amusing.

"Stop laughing." Avery glanced toward the door and lowered her voice. "I'm not joking with you. Do you know what the Alvarez family used to do to get rich?"

"What?"

Avery leaned closer to her ear and spoke softly, loud enough for the two of them to hear. "They made their fortune by selling firearms." Josephine's eyes widened. "How do you know that?"

"It's just a bit of insider information. But that's not important. What's important is that these people know some so-called 'masters' who dabble in shady practices. Although I'm not a big believer in this stuff, many wealthy individuals and powerful people believe in it. There must be some reason behind it."

Avery stared at Josephine determinedly and concluded. "So, I suspect you're cursed."

Josephine's lips twitched. "Don't be so superstitious."

Avery waved her hand dismissively. "Fine, forget it. I'll find someone to cleanse you properly after I get discharged. I'm sure something is going on." Avery thought Josephine was reluctant to leave Lewis and chose to stay with him. Josephine couldn't explain herself, so she let Avery misunderstand

her.

As long as Avery wasn't in trouble, everything was fine.

Josephine spent the entire afternoon with Avery, and Avery spent the whole afternoon advising her.

At 8:00 pm, Josephine received a call from Yona, asking her to pick her up.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, Josephine bid her farewell.

Josephine glanced at the location Yona sent her. It seemed to be a club. Considering how well-behaved Yona had been lately, Josephine instructed her bodyguard to take her there.

Josephine arrived outside the private room Yona told her. Surprisingly, there were bodyguards stationed outside. They stopped her from entering the

room.

"Who are you looking for?"

"I'm here to find Yona. She asked me to pick her up."

The bodyguard scrutinized her from head to toe before letting her pass.

Josephine pushed open the door, and a wave of suffocating odor hit her.

The room was bathed in blinding red lights, and smoke filled the air. It looked like a haunted cave. Inside were five or six people whose appearances blurred under the crimson lights. Josephine couldn't discern their genders.

Josephine surveyed the surroundings and scanned the room. She finally confirmed that Yona wasn't there.

Just as she was about to leave, a hand suddenly landed on her shoulder.

Before Josephine could react, she was pulled into an embrace.noveldrama
