Chapter 4

SEVEN YEARS LATER

(PRESENT DAY.)

“Hi Magda,” Katherine greeted the moment she stepped into the main living room.

“Hi Honey.” The 44-year-old housekeeper smiled.

“You’re home early. How was work?”

“Hectic but fine. Lewis insisted we have to be somewhere by 9:30 so I had someone take over my shift. How are my babies?” She smiled.

“Fine. The boys wore themselves out today so they slept early but the nanny is putting Sophie to sleep.”

“Cool. I will just check up on her before I go on my date.”

“You want me to prepare anything for you? I’m sure you were working all day and haven’t had anything.”

Katherine chuckled. “I think sometimes you forget that I’m an adult.”

“No matter how old one is, He or She remains a child in the face of her guardian.”

“Please give that lecture to Beatrice. She really needs it.”

“All I know is that your mama loves you. She just has a really bad way of showing it.”

Katherine rolled her eyes making Magda chuckle.

“I will go check up on my baby girl.”

“Okay love.”

Hugging Magda, Katherine made her way upstairs to her side of the wing which had Her and her babies’ rooms while the left side of the wing belonged to her mother and the rest of the rooms were used as visitors' rooms.

“Good evening,” Kathie said in a singing voice as she entered her daughter’s room.

“Mommy!!!” Sophie jumped down from her bed and ran towards the door where her mother was.

Katherine smiled, putting her bag on the couch not too far from the door. Her little girl’s room was a type any seven-year-old could dream of. It was spacious and beautifully decorated.

“How are you, my love?” She said, kissing Sophie’s cheek.

“Fine. I missed you, mommy,”

“I missed you too, my love.”

“Magda told me your brothers are sleeping already.” Sophie nodded. “How was school today? Did you all do your homework?”

“School was fine, mommy. Yes, Alice helped us with our homework.” She referred to their nanny.

“I’m happy you came back early. Please can you read me a bedtime story?” Sophie smiled. Kathie could see the excitement on her daughter’s face.

“I would love to baby but I have somewhere to be.”

The smile on Sophie’s face was replaced with a frown.

“With Lewis?”

Katherine nodded.

“Okay,” Sophie whispered. She was about to go back to her bed when her mother pulled her back to her side.

“You know I would never say No to you unless it’s important.”

“You like Lewis more and me and my brothers.’’

“You know that’s not true, baby,” Kathie said, still crouched down to her baby girl’s height.

“You don’t want to read me a bedtime story but you want to spend time with him.”

Katherine sighed. Sometimes she had no idea if having smart children was a good thing.

“But honey, you know I would never say NO to you if it’s not important.” She reiterated.

“I don’t like Lewis.” She frowned, folding her tiny arms.

“Why? He’s a good man. We’ve known each other for a while now. He loves you and your brothers. He buys toys for you all.”

“But we don’t like him. We never even play with the toys.” She waved her hands, explaining her feelings to her mother.”

Katherine sighed. She has done all her best to make her children like Lewis but they wouldn’t budge.

“Okay, I’ll read one with you and Alice will take over. Is that fine with you?”

The little girl nodded. “Thank you, mommy.” She hugged Katherine.

Kathie kissed her daughter’s cheek, then hugged her back.

Hardly was Kathie halfway through the story when her daughter fell asleep. She covered the little one properly with the duvet, kissed her forehead, then helped herself out of the little girl’s room.

Getting to her room, She took a quick shower and got ready for her date with Lewis.

........

“Hi Babe,” Lewis helped her down from her car after opening the door for her.

“My baby!” She smiled. The duo exchanged a short passionate kiss.

“Sorry, I’m late. Sophie was throwing a tantrum.”

Lewis smiled, “It’s fine. Hope she’s okay?”

“Yeah, She just needed my attention.”

“You look good.” He said, not taking his eyes off her. She was putting on a short red dress with matching shoes and jewelry.

Kathie blushed, “You look good too.” He was in his suit.

“Let’s get you in. You must be hungry.”

She chuckled, “I am.”

Once they handed the key to the valet, the two lovebirds made their way into one of the finest restaurants in California.

Once they got settled at the VIP section, they were served immediately since Lewis made reservations on time and he knew Kathie’s favorite.

”Won’t you pick your call?” She asked when he muted the incoming call for the fourth time.

Lewis shook his head, he picked up his phone from the table and turned it off. “Tonight is for you alone. I don’t want anyone to disturb us.”

“It could be urgent, you know?”

“There is nothing more important than you right now.”

Katherine smiled, reaching for her glass cup which still had some red wine in it. “So what’s the important thing you want to discuss with me?”

“Is it about Natasha? You two reconciled? Is she back in the states?” She asked after his sister.

“No, it’s not about Natasha. She should be back, I’m not sure. Please let’s not talk about her. As I said, this night is about us.”

Katherine took a sip of her wine, then placed the cup back on the table.

“Go ahead, I’m all ears.”

Lewis reached for both of her hands and held them in his. After staring into her eyes for a few seconds, he sighed.

“You’re scaring me, honey.” She mumbled, beginning to get concerned. All her life, She had known Lewis to be a very confident person.

“You’re an amazing woman, Kate. We’ve been together for four years now and no doubt you’re the best thing that has ever happened to me. The way you stay in control still baffles me. You take your

job seriously, you take great care of your beautiful kids, and yet you still create time for us; for this relationship.”

“I never want to lose you. The thought of you being a wife to another man scares me to shit about me. Call me selfish, I don’t care. I just want to make things right by fighting for you.” Lewis released her hands, rose to his feet, and approached her where she was seated. He took a deep blue box out of his pocket and went on one knee.

IN AUSTRALIA (17 hours ahead)

Oliver just finished a meeting in the conference room. He was almost at his office when his secretary informed him that he had a visitor.

“Who?”

“Your father, sir. He’s been waiting for a while,”

Oliver nodded, then entered his office.

“You didn’t tell me you would be stopping by. This must be really important.” Oliver said as he strolled into his office.

“Good afternoon to you too, son.” Charles was sitting on the chair opposite his son’s desk.

“So what’s the occasion?” Ollie asked the moment he took his seat.

“I need you to go to California?”

Oliver frowned. “What for?”

“To represent me for an important occasion.”

“What’s the occasion? Our branches there are doing perfectly well as far as I remember. Why do you have to be there?”

“Not for work.”

“Dad, please go straight to the point. I have a lot to work on before heading over to the club tonight.” He said, taking out a file from his drawer.

“Beatrice invited me to her wedding and I want you to attend and present her a gift on my behalf.”

“Beatrice?” Ollie said with confusion written all over his face.

“Yeah. My ex. Your Ex stepmother.”

“Didn’t She die or something?”

“Why are you being negative?”

“I’m not. Isn’t that what you told me years ago? That She and her daughter had a car crash?” Material © NôvelDrama.Org.

“Oh,” Charles playfully scratched the back of his neck. “I said that because you kept on disturbing me with their whereabouts. I only said they got into a car accident. Didn’t say they lost their lives.”

“God, Dad, You’re the worst!!!”

“So you’ve been keeping in touch with her all these years?”

“Not really. After the divorce, we didn’t talk for a long time. Then she reached out to me one time and we talked a few times after that until I got an invitation to her wedding."

“If you won’t be able to attend, why not let her know and ship a gift to her? Why do I have to be involved?”

“I feel she’s getting married to get revenge on me.”

Oliver scoffed. “Dad, It’s been seven years!!!”

“She’s getting married to my childhood friend who used to be my business partner during my early days of business.”

“Does it matter who she fucks or who she’s married to? Didn’t you say you no longer love her? Hence, the reason for the divorce.”

“I’ve always loved Beatrice but she’s just a handful. Since she left me, I haven’t gotten any woman that would satisfy me in bed like her. We had a big fight that night. That's why I let her go. No one leaves me just like that. I was hoping she would come crawling back to me to accept her back but that never happened.”

“I see no reason I have to attend the wedding. If you are not up for it, then make it known to her. There’s no way I’m leaving Australia”

“I thought you would jump at the offer, that’s why I’m here.”

“Why do you think I would?”

“Wouldn’t you give anything to see Katherine again? Besides, I thought you and Beatrice were very good friends.”

“Dad, that’s all in the past. I’m sure everyone has moved on. You should too.”

“Yeah, I’ve moved on. And that’s why I’m not attending. As far as I remember, Beatrice adores you so she will be so happy to see you, and knowing that you’re there to represent me, She would be unable to tell that I’m not over her.”

“You may not understand Son, but I have my integrity to protect and out of respect, I feel you should be there. Even though Beatrice picked someone I don’t like, I still wish her well.”

“Are you sure about that? Or you’re doing this just to calm your fucking ego?”

“It doesn’t matter if my reasons are genuine or not. Get your bags ready to go to California next weekend.
