Chapter 40 Almost lost his birthright for a coochie
"hello Mom,"
"How could you Xander," Mrs Miller's voice came in half broken, he could imagine tears streaming
down her face, wailing to his father about how he had brought shame upon the family. His whole face
went white, he could feel the phone slipping out of his grasps as the next possible few years of his life
became almost as clear as a rainy day, this was the ending for him, it was like the Jacob and Esau
story they always learnt in sunday school where Esau sold his birthright for just some stew, but in his Published by Nôv'elD/rama.Org.
case, he indirectly sold his birthright for a cheap hotel coochie.
"Mom, I can explain I swear to God," Xander pleaded, even though he had nothing to say other
than he was sorry and ashamed about the insult and disgraced he had brought upon such a prestige
family name
"I'm listening," Mrs Miller said impatiently.
"Because you seemed to have alot to say when Araceli told you, even though she was just trying
to make things work and make everyone happy," Mrs Miller said feeling appalled by her own son's
behavior, even his Dad was more romantic even though he was a very old fashioned and very southern
with the full on grease accent.
"Look Mom, I swear I didn't do it intentionally," that's all Xander could say, he's back was against
the wall here and there was nothing he could say.
"All you had to do was to tell me beforehand so I could order a better dress and prepare for the
whole family dinner," Mrs Miller said.
"I know, I…. Wait what??!" Xander said, suddenly processing what she said, he realized they were
both talking about two universally different topics.
"I said Araceli told you we would be having dinner with the Garcia's and you didn't even bother to
tell me," Mrs Miller said.
"Oh...uhm, I'm sorry mom, I didn't...Well It just kind of skipped my mind," Xander said, unsure of
what to say now. A dinner with the Garcia's was something he definitely didn't know about, I mean why
the hell would he want to be around those excessively loud Italians or Mexicans or what ever the fuck
they were , but this was another move by Araceli and he didn't know what else to expect from her, she
was always a good ten steps ahead of him and Alice.
"We will talk about it later, see you later Chris," Mrs Miller said, ending the call.
"Damn!!, I hate it so much when she calls me Chris or Christopher," Xander said, in frustration of
no longer being and control and not just because he couldn't stand the name, he couldn't stand the fact
Araceli was now in charge of the wheels and he had no choice but to let her drive him to unknown
destinations.
"Well?!," Alice asked impatiently, his face went from turning white, to regaining color, to looking
lost, now heave frustration she didn't even understand where It was coming from.
"Turns out Araceli planned a dinner with my family and I was supposed to know about it," Xander
replied, shaking his head, this is way more headache than he signed up for.
"Well you are definitely not going, right?,"
"I mean, you and I both know that this is a plain ambush, she's gonna expose you in front of both
of you guys parents," Alice reasoned with him.
"I mean it is not rocket science Xander," Alice said touching his shoulder but his expression was
distant, he was so far back in his head that when she smiled at him to reassure him, he just turned
away and let himself get swayed by his thoughts.
"Xander, please talk to me," Alice pleaded, she hasn't seen him this lost ever since his uncle's
death which threw him off balance.
"Alice, I don't know alright,"
"I don't know, It's hard to even know what she is goddamn planning, she told me I would receive a
call from my mom, and I did, my mom sounded like she knew about it, just for her to bring up a dinner
shit I don't even know about," Xander said racking his hands through his hair and looked up at Alice
who just looked at him in pity, then a notification bell went off in his office startling both of them.
Alice face had a little trace of fear as she looked at Xander's phone and it didn't come on, It was
definitely her phone then, taking a sigh of relief because she didn't think Xander could take anymore of
this, she brought the phone out but she soon felt her heart sank a little as see saw the heading of the
message, it was no other than Araceli.
"What is that, are you ok babe?," Xander asked, standing up to check on the message and he
understood why she stood transfixed staring at her phone.
It was a message of Araceli telling her that "of course you are also invited, you didn't think I will
leave you out of the fun now did you," Xander read out loud, this was enough reason for them to stop
underrating her because she kept throwing in new moves, from the way she sent the text, she using 'of
course you are invited too' showed she knows Xander was with Alice and she knows that Alice knows
about the dinner on Saturday.
"From being the hunter to being the hunted," Alice muttered to herself, swiping the message off
her screen and taking her purse to take her leave.
"Wait where are you going?," Xander asked, moving after her as she was almost at the door.
"I'm heading home for an early tequila or something drier, just to clear my head," Alice said
opening the door and exited the office which Xander followed her closely behind, he couldn't ask her
the question that he wanted to ask because of the weird look his secretary and other top worker were
giving him as he ran after a fast paced Alice. He led her to the private elevator that led directly to the
underground parking lot where supplies and company cars were parked or came through.
"What should we do about Araceli babe?," Xander asked tapping the last floor button on the silver
elevator wall which didn't reflect back as their image, just blur excuses.
"I don't know honestly,"
"She has already showed us that she is way ahead of us so let's just play along nicely," "This new
Araceli…" Alice said as she pulled out a cigar and lit it up.
"Doesn't take friendly threats well,"
"She will go explosive mode and blow both of us out of proportion and I don't even like the sound
of that," Alice said in between puffs.
"We don't smoke on the building Alice," Xander said staring at her with disapproval.
"Technically, I'm not in the building,"
"Then where are you then," Xander asked rhetorically, not expecting the answer she gave him.
"In a weird metallic poor silver coated box hooked up on wires we are supposed to trust Xander,"
Alice said walking out of the elevator.
"Wait, you didn't bring your car?," Xander asked, checking the parking lot and couldn't spot her red
Porsche anywhere in the parking lot.
"Yeah, I will be taking a cab home," Alice said, dropping the cigar on the ground and grinding it
with her combat boot.
"I could give you a ride home you know," Xander offered but Alice was already walking towards the
exit, she waved her hand in dismissal as reply and Xander sighed.
He knew being control was a character they both had in common but right now none of them were
in control and it was taking a toll on both of them, and in addition, Araceli wasn't making it easy for any
of them in any way and right now sitting on a desk and handling a million files was the last thing on his
mind.
He headed to take a lunch break at ten am because why not, he was the CEO or at least till
Araceli was ready to tell everyone on earth what he did, he would be the one guy that broke the golden
couple who was ruling the business world, he exited the building skipping the cafe at his workplace
because they sold the shittiest coffee that has ever touched his tongue.
The bell of Venus cafe drew him stares like fire to moth and as usual a bunch of whispers filled the
cafe. He didn't know why people thought he was a big deal just because he was selected as Top 10
hottest businessmen in Newyork city in a cringe article.
"Hi, I'm Ricky, what would you like to have today sir," The barista said in a bored voice looking at
the man who just caused the little frenzy in the cafe, hell he wasn't even that hot for christ sake.
"Some latte with extra cream with bagels," Xander said, not sparing the barista a second look.
"That's fifteen fifty sir," Ricky said.
Xander gave him a hundred dollar note and told him to keep the change. Ricky couldn't if he was
just a silly lavish spender or he couldn't just bother to wait for the change.
