Chapter thirty-three
Alpha Matteo
Sighing, I opened the door and walked inside the room. I placed my left hand by the wall side and switched on the light.
It’s the middle of the night, and all this drama going on has made me spend more unnecessary time at work. We need to come up with something before Alessandro makes a move.
His silence only means one thing… death and disaster. And losing another member of my pack is something I just can’t bear. I’m so tired of this never-ending battle.
With another sigh escaping my lips, I turned to glance at the bed. Elena was peacefully lying there, snoring softly. Crossing paths with her has been the best thing that’s ever happened to me. She’s my hidden source of strength and also my vulnerability.
As I gazed at her peaceful form, her hand gently cradling the pillow against her chest, a wave of warmth washed over me. The frown on my forehead melted away, replaced by a sense of tranquility. Before I knew it, my legs moved on their own accord, drawing me closer to the bed.
The bed sank beneath my weight as I settled down beside her, I couldn’t tear my eyes away from her. My finger traced a slow, gentle path down her face, delicately tucking a strand of hair behind her right ear. She looked absolutely stunning, and it was uncanny how much Vincenzo resembled her.
I watched her toss and turn, clutching the pillow tightly, she remained sound asleep. A smile crept across my face as I continued to observe her. Vincenzo was truly a precious blessing from the moon goddess, but… we may have spoiled him a bit too much. Now, I can’t help but worry about what the future holds because of him.
However, I heave out a frustrated breath, the warmth in my gaze just vanishes, and I can’t help but feel worried and concerned. As I stare down at Elena, my heart skips a beat. My biggest fear is losing her or anyone else again. I don’t know why I feel like I can’t have this forever like I won’t be beside her forever. And that’s why I want to cherish the time we have together and enjoy every moment. The future is uncertain, and with the way things are going, I am afraid that a day will come when I will no longer be there.
I don’t want to fail her
But again, I don’t want to lose her as I feel that fear of losing her, a lone tear slides down my eye and lands on her face, wetting her cheeks. I gently wipe it away, trying to be as quiet as possible. Sending that treaty petition to Alessandro was a difficult decision, but I was willing to do anything to save my family and my pack.
What if we didn’t meet his demand?
The question was still lingering in my thoughts when suddenly, I felt a warm hand on my face. “Honey, when did you get back?”
I turned my gaze to stare back at the beauty in front of me, and a smile spread across my face. At that moment, all the fear that was lingering in my mind vanished as I looked into her captivating eyes. “I just got back a few minutes ago,” I replied, gently stroking her cheeks.
“You must be tired,” she mumbled, sensually rubbing my cheeks. Her touch had an immediate calming effect on me. I nodded in agreement, leaning into her magnificent touch. It felt so comforting to be in her presence. All text © NôvelD(r)a'ma.Org.
I closed my eyes, savoring the moment as if all my problems had momentarily vanished. But then, her voice broke the silence, “Have you eaten?”
Sighing, I opened my eyes and gazed into her innocent face. She truly was the best thing that had ever happened to me. “I’m not hungry,” I replied, but seeing the deep frown that suddenly appeared on her face, I regretted my response.
Seeing the frown, I already knew what would come next. So, I broke free from her touch and immediately felt a chill at the loss of contact. I managed to stand up from the bed, but she quickly held me back. “You’re stressing yourself,” she said, her voice filled with concern.
Looking at her, I swallowed hard. “It’s for the best,” I said, my voice filled with determination. I’m doing this for you, Vincenzo, and our pack. I don’t want to lose you, Elena. I want you to live a life of ease, without any reason to be afraid or hidden.
“About the treaty petition…” I watched her gulp nervously. “Are you sure about this?” she added, fear lingering in her gaze as she sat upright to look at me.
“Yes,” I replied, seeing a sad smile on her face. I traced my finger on her forehead to help her relax. Her warm gaze stared back at me before she let out a sigh, her fear disappearing and leaving only worry in her eyes. “Do you think that just the treaty petition will be enough?”
I sighed, feeling the weight of the situation. “This has always been what King Alessandro wanted… submission,” I muttered. But Elena shook her head. “Yes, but……” she said, earning a raised brow from me.
“King Alessandro, the one we both know, wanted superiority. He wanted to rule the whole realm, and that petition can only mean one thing,” she muttered, holding my hands tight. “Are you sure about this, honey?”
“Don’t worry, dear. I know what I’m doing,” I reassured her, trying to conceal my concern and the emotions tearing me apart.
This won’t be easy.
“What if we can’t meet their demand?” she asked, voicing the very question that had been keeping me up at night. “He’ll still come for all of us,” she muttered, the weight of the situation sinking in.
My heart shattered at her final words, *He will come for us all* I can’t bear the thought of losing you, Elena. I would do anything, even sacrifice my life, to ensure your safety, Vincenzo’s safety, and to give you both a life of freedom and peace. No matter what he does, he is still my son….. My only heir.
“We have to put an end to this never-ending war. And that’s why I have to do what needs to be done,” I said, my voice steady as I fought back the emotions threatening to overwhelm me. I didn’t want her to sense the heavy burden weighing on my heart through our mate bond.
“This is a huge risk, babe,” the fear is back in her again.
“I know it’s a big issue, babe,” I replied, acknowledging the fear that had resurfaced in her once again.
Leaning forward, I gently held her face in my hands, looking deep into her eyes. “I won’t rule forever, and nobody has ever stood up to fight Alessandro as I had,” I said, feeling a lump in my throat as I saw tears welling up in her eyes. “But have you ever wondered what will happen once Vincenzo takes the throne as the new Alpha? He’s like a feather in front of Alessandro,” I finished, watching the tears stream down her face.
I wiped away her tears and gently kissed her lips. “If Vincenzo is to rule, then I have to do this for him, for you, and for the future of our realm and all the helpless mythical creatures out there,” I whispered to her before standing up and turning around to leave. She didn’t stop me this time around.
However, as I walked towards the wardrobe to undress, a chilling silence filled the room. I could sense her eyes still fixed on me, and her emotions flowed through our mate bond, giving me a severe headache.
I’m sorry, Elena. I know this is a risky move, but I have to do it. If there ever comes a day when I’m no longer here, just know that I love you and always will, even in death.
