Chapter 2006
"What kind of relationship do we have?" Hertha's heart was racing, her mind a whirlwind of emotions. The memory of Alaric's passionate kiss was still fresh, and despite her willing participation, she now felt a wave of embarrassment, wishing she could vanish into thin air.
Just when the awkwardness was at its peak, Alaric brought up the nature of their relationship. How on earth was she supposed to have a straight talk about this now?
"We're getting engaged," Alaric blurted out, urgency evident in his voice as he attempted to discuss the day's events.
He was cut short by Kimberly's voice from outside the room, "Are you two done yet? Hurry up, don't keep us waiting."
At Kimberly's words, Hertha felt a jolt of nervousness and hastily made her way around Alaric to leave the room. "Coming!" Hertha called out.
Alaric, not wanting to offend his future mother-in-law, quickly added, "Yeah, on our way!"
His tone was gentler, more considerate than Hertha's.
As Hertha and Alaric emerged, Kimberly faced them with a stern look, "What were you two plotting in there?"
Alaric raised an eyebrow, thinking to himself how sharp Kimberly was, almost as if she had a sixth sense about these things.
Fortunately, they hadn't gotten far with their 'plotting', or else Kimberly would never believe whatever they said next, convinced they were trying to pull one over on her.
"Mom, you're overthinking it. How could I possibly be plotting anything with him?" Hertha shot Alaric a sideways glance, clearly annoyed.
"I hope so. I'm telling you, things are what they are, and there's no escaping or deceiving me. It's not going to end well for you," Kimberly retorted with a cold huff.
"Look, how could we ever think of deceiving you? Even if we had the guts, we wouldn't dare," Alaric said, laying it on thick.
"Don't sweet-talk me. It's not like you haven't tried to pull one over on me before," Kimberly rolled her eyes at Alaric. This text is property of Nô/velD/rama.Org.
Caught off guard by the gesture, Alaric touched his nose awkwardly, realizing where Hertha got her habit of rolling her eyes from.
Soon, the three of them were seated at the dining table, Hertha and Alaric on one side, facing Kimberly.
Sitting across from her mother, Hertha felt like she was on trial, waiting for a verdict with bated breath. Sweat started to form in her palms as she nervously swallowed.
