The Alpha’s Dynasty

Butterflies

Maya.

One of my resolutions upon returning to work was to stay as far away from Kim as possible. She tried to be nice to me but I was having none of it. I refused to talk to her about what she had done and anything outside work.

I even stopped giving many tasks to her, especially important ones because my distrust had increased. Now I had good reasons not to trust her. I changed all the E-mail passwords so that she couldn’t do anything on my behalf. I didn’t care how big my current workload was because I didn’t want to get into trouble again. Thankfully I found a part time teacher who was helping out at St. Felicity’s.

Jana was a college graduate who was still looking for employment and loved children. She was volunteering but I gave her a monthly allowance from my personal funds. This was to cater for her transport, food and other personal effects. I hoped that one day the center would have enough funds to grant her permanent employment.

I was so tired but I still had five pages of data to finish analyzing. The light from the screen was making me feel dizzy and my eyes became teary every time I yawned, an action which had been a little too frequent in the last thirty minutes. There was a dull ache in my head as I had been using the computer for six hours nonstop.

I stood up and ambled to the window where I looked outside. The sky was shining with beautiful stars and the city below was illuminated by different kinds of lights. The roads were jam packed with traffic and I had to wait until ten pm so I could drive home easily. But, in my condition I was not sure I want to wait one more hour. Besides, I wasn’t sure I could drive safely. In situations like that, I used to check if Harry was also working late so he could drive me home. If he wasn’t there, I’d call Anna.

I went back to my chair and got my phone then dial Anna’s number. I didn’t think I’d be finishing this work anytime soon. The phone rang but she didn’t pick up. On my favorite contacts list, I spotted Kelli’s name and rolled my eyes, wondering how it got there. My sister was not the type of person you called during emergency situations because high chances were she’d not do anything to help.

I remembered one time I cut my finger and she asked me to go to the hospital yet she was with me at my parents’ house. There was a first aid kit in the house. I had to bandage my own wound while she watched a Venezuelan telenovela.

The only person who could save me was Harry but I yelled at and blamed him for causing the rift between Zane and I. Maybe it was time to get over that. Harry had been so nice to me and we had always had such great times together to let our friendship end just like that. I took a deep breath before calling him.

“Hi Harry,” I started. “I’m sorry for what I said the last time we met.”

“Yeah, you should be. But I understand that you were hurt and in a lot of pain at that time so it’s okay.”

“I’m glad to hear that,” I said and hesitated.

“Is there something you need, Maya?”

“What, no. Why would you think-?”

“Just say it,” he cut me off.

I told him my problem. He told me that he’d be here as soon as possible. Twenty minutes later, he sent me a message that he was already in the parking yard. I logged out of my computer and turned it off. Grabbing my bag, I headed out. I stepped into the elevator and when I reached the ground floor, I found Zane talking to one of the guards. He was wearing a black suit and looking as gorgeous as ever.

“Good evening, Mr. Carrington,” I said to him. I had wanted to slink away without being noticed but it was too risky. Considering that my job was on the line, I had to be as polite and respectful as ever.

“Good evening,” he barely glanced at me while replying so I quickly opened the door and walked out. At the parking yard, I scanned the area and spotted Harry’s car. Feeling relieved, I headed towards it and when I reached out to open the door, I heard Zane’s voice. My body stiffened.

“Miss Bennett.”NôvelDrama.Org holds this content.

I turned and realized that he had stepped outside as well and was not looking at me but at Harry who could be seen clearly in the well-lit parking yard. He was standing by the side of his car waiting for me.

“Yes, Mr. Carrington?” I said, looking at him.

“Come with me to my office,” he said quite loudly. The security guard looked shocked and even from a distance, I could tell that Harry’s fingers were balling into fists. He was far from happy after hearing Zane’s words. I stood there, not knowing what to do. In the end, I decided to listen to my boss. I had already been given a warning and couldn’t risk losing my job. Zane started going back into the building.

“Alright, Mr. Carrington,” I said. “I’ll be there in a minute.”

“Right now,” He said. Stopping, he turned to Harry. “Mr. Smith, you can leave. I’ll make sure Miss Bennett gets back home safely. Have a good night.”

I gave Harry an apologetic look before going back into the building. My heart was beating faster than usual as I entered the elevator with Zane. I stood as far as possible from him, feeling the awkwardness and hoping that the elevator would get to its destination as soon as possible.

Finally, we reached his floor and he stepped out fast. Taking a deep breath, I followed him, the butterflies in my heart running amok.
