Chapter 986 A Thorn In The Heart
Eunice pressed her face against the door, listening carefully to the sounds outside.
She wasn't being melodramatic, intentionally causing a fuss.
It was because Bailey had a pair of piercing, sharp eyes. Eunice dared not show her face in front of her, fearing the latter might discern something.
She had just arrived there, completely unaware of the situation inside. She would have to wait a few days, gradually figuring things out, before she could proceed with her next move.
However, at the moment, Cameron was her only support. She must firmly hold onto him, making him trust her without a doubt.
Only in this way could she do what she wanted under his protection.
Realizing that Bailey had already left, she shakily opened the door.
“C-Cameron, I'm sorry. I'm too filthy, and I feel inferior. I don't want to face them, I...”
Cameron stepped forward, disregarding her resistance, and forcefully pulled her into his embrace.
“Blaze, I'm sorry. I've been such a jerk. If I had understood my own heart sooner and lived a good life with you in the Yablon residence, you wouldn't have fallen into the trap set by Kurt because of chasing after me. You're not tainted. In my heart, you've always been the purest girl. Once we've sorted everything out here, I'll take you to meet my parents. Shall we settle our marriage then?”
Eunice clung tightly to his shirt, her little face buried in his chest, faintly revealing a ferocious expression.
She wasn't jealous because she didn't fancy Cameron.
She was simply jealous—jealous of the woman called Blaze.
Even though she had been thoroughly tainted by Kurt, Cameron, the heir of the internationally renowned Yablon family, still treated her like a treasure in his palm.
On the one hand, there was Kurt, who was willing to brave dangers for her and risk being seen through as he traded Eunice in her stead. He had made up his mind to marry her and make her the matriarch of the White family.
On the other hand, Cameron didn't care that she bore the marks of other men all over her body as he held her in his arms, promising her a lifetime of peace.
How could she not envy such a woman?
“No, I can't be with you. I'm not worthy of you.”
“Blaze...”
Cameron reached out to cradle her face, his eyes filled with deep sorrow as he looked at her. His voice was low and hoarse as he continued, “Can you please stop belittling yourself? You endured all those hardships to save me. If even you are not worthy of me, then there is no one in this world who is.”
Having said that, his trembling, thin lips slowly inched closer and closer toward the pale corners of her lips.
A glint flashed in Eunice's eyes. Pretending to push him away, she flung the sedative fragrance she held in her hand into the air.
That thing was colorless and odorless, so Cameron couldn't detect it at all.
After he inhaled the fragrance, the way he looked at her became even more intense because images of her chasing after him all those years surfaced in his mind uncontrollably.
She pursued him, but he rejected her. Year after year, day after day, whether in stormy weather or under clear skies, she would always appear by his side.
Each and every scene caused him heartache and self-reproach.
If I had accepted her earlier and held her tightly in my arms, would she have been spared from those hellish torments?
“Blaze, I'm sorry...”
Eunice watched the man being lost in a daze, his eyes filled with pain and the guilt so thick it was palpable. A sly curve formed at the corner of her lips.
This man had completely regarded her as Blaze. Every time he looked at her face, he was constantly filled with guilt and self-blame.
The function of this sedative fragrance was to infinitely magnify the thing one least wanted to confront within their heart, forcing them to face it.
What Cameron didn't want to confront was the fact that Blaze had once pursued him relentlessly, without any regrets, only to be rejected by him time and time again.
Those past memories would become a thorn at the tip of his heart, deeply piercing into it, making him profoundly realize just how much he truly owed her.
“I'm fine, really, I'm fine. If given the chance to choose again, I would still, without hesitation, trade myself for the antidote. No matter what, I am tainted. You don't need to comfort me. That beast, Kurt, has been after me these days. He...”
“Enough,” Cameron stated, his eyes reddened and his voice laced with infinite sorrow and desolation.
“All of that is in the past, Blaze. Please, no more words. I promise you that I will never let you get hurt again. I swear.”
After he finished speaking, he leaned in to kiss her brows and then her eyelids. As he gently caressed her cheeks, his movements were tender and soft.
Eunice was worried that he would see through the thin, hyper-realistic mask on her face, and she abruptly pushed him away.
“Stay away. Stay away. Don't touch me. Please don't touch me. Ah...”
She feigned being lost in her own thoughts, stumbling back into a corner. Sliding down the wall, she curled up on the floor, hugging her knees as she began to sob.
Seeing her so sensitive and constantly being reminded of those endless torments, Cameron felt his heart shatter in an instant.
How should he soothe her physical and emotional pain?
Kurt...
Kurt White...
He clenched his fists tightly, his teeth grinding audibly.
I won't let that b*stard die a peaceful death. I'm going to torture him with the most vicious poison in the world, make him live a life worse than death or living hell. He will live in endless pain and suffering for the rest of his life.
“All right, all right. I won't touch you. I won't touch you anymore. Calm down, Blaze, just calm down.”
The woman in the corner was lost in her own world, murmuring incessantly, her body shaking violently.
A full five minutes passed before she slowly lifted her stiff head, her voice tearing as she said, “I'm sorry, Cameron, I can't face you with the same calmness as before. I'm scared. I'm terrified. I can't contain the despair in my heart. If you think I'm being unreasonable, just throw me out.”
Cameron turned his face slightly, a tear slipping from the corner of his eye.
He had lived for so many years, yet he had never shed a tear.
These days, for her sake, he had shed manly tears more than once or twice.
“I won't come any closer, so don't be afraid. I'll stay by your side, watching over you, until you step out of the darkness.”
“Can I have some alone time, please? Could you step away for a bit?”
Although Cameron was somewhat reluctant, seeing her eyes still filled with fear, he found himself unable to utter a word of refusal.
“All right. I'll go to the kitchen and whip up something for you to eat. Don't just squat in the corner. Go and lie down on the bed.”
As Eunice watched his retreating figure, a sly, triumphant smirk slowly crept onto her lips.
Now that Cameron had fully trusted her, she planned to win over the man she fancied before Catherine returned.
Castle in the countryside.
Kurt was lounging on the couch inside the study, toying with the family seal made of white jade in his hand.
The front of the seal was engraved with the name “White,” while the back was engraved with the words “Venom Valley.” Such a small object, yet it symbolized supreme power.
Now... I finally have this in my hand.
Creak!
The door swung open, and the butler walked in from outside. He informed, “Mr. Kurt, Ms. Cersei has arrived. She says she has some important information to share with you.” Copyright Nôv/el/Dra/ma.Org.
Ms. Cersei?
My half-sister?
