Chapter 36. Mine

Chapter 36. Mine

Noah POV

When Langley left, I slowly massaged my temples. Then, I closed my eyes, fingers tapping the smooth surface of my desk.

My head ached, thinking the man I trusted did not deserve my trust.

My laptop sounded like a notification for a new email. And when I checked the sender, it was Langley. I opened the file with shaking hands and started

dding its contents.

When I finished, my chest felt stuffy. Here is the proof of my uncle’s duplicity.

I remember five years ago, he pushed me to take a leave of absence from the company to concentrate on myself.

“You need to heal from the loss of your parents, from what happened to your marriage, and to get your strength back. Don’t worry about the company, I will manage it for you.”

I snickered in my head because I took his words and trusted him.

Talk about misplaced trust.

I called Brent.

“We have the evidence,” I told him and forwarded him the email Langley sent me.

For a while, we discussed what to do.

“We need to take caution. Uncle Matt does not suspect yet that we are working behind his back, and I want to keep it that way. I want him to know that I still trust him. We have to catch the thief red–handed.” I told Brent, my eyes squinting in anger.

I was about to cut the line when Brent interrupted.

“I have the data you requested concerning Briana’s triplets.” He told me.

That had me perking up. I had been waiting for it for hours.

“Send them to me now,” I ordered.

A few seconds later, my device pinged a notification for a new email.

I quickly opened the attachment Brent sent me and scanned the contents.

It was the triplets‘ birth certificate.

I checked everything, and when I saw their date of birth, something inside me clicked.

“It was there. My proof. Those kids are mine.” I announced with pride when I saw their birth was from four years ago, contrary to what Briana disclosed earlier that they were born three years ago, Content bel0ngs to Nôvel(D)r/a/ma.Org.

Right there and then, I knew Briana was fibbing, and the only explanation was that she did not want me to find out my connection with the children.

The realization hurts that I lost her trust for what I did to her.

Too bad my instincts were strong. I knew from the very first time I saw those children that they and I were related. The affinity was undeniable.

Brent cleared his throat.

“A word of caution, dude. Even though they were born a year earlier, it still does not prove they are yours. You told me that Briana had an affair. What if the children were the product of that affair?”

“I remembered everything now, Brent. Those kids are mine. Briana did not cheat on me. I just assumed because of the pictures. Come to think of it, those shots alleging my wife’s infidelity were all taken in public places.

“At the time, my mind was muddled, I could only remember bits and pieces, but now I remembered everything.”

“That’s good. But you must remember. Briana already created a family for your children with Marcus Ford. They don’t need you.”

Brent was right. My heart feels stuffy, knowing my children are unaware of my existence and are also calling another man for a father.

Insecurity filled me at that moment.

“It was my fault, and I intend to rectify the mistake immediately,” I told Brent. My voice grew hard with conviction.

“You are asking for trouble, dude,” Brent said.

“Marcus is not just some man. He is one of the owners of the Ford Empire, whose fortune matches yours. What you are planning won’t be easy.”

“And what should I do? Sit back and allow that man to play father to my children. I need to get them and their mother.”

Brent laughed. “I thought you only wanted the kids. Why are you now talking about taking Briana back? You are delusional, Noah Hunter. Briana won’t take you back even if you grovel.”

He sounded ominous, and I felt panicky after hearing that.

“Shut up!” I hissed and dropped the call.

But before I could press the end button, I heard Brent’s laughter, and it echoed in my head.

Without much thought, I got up from my desk, almost knocking my chair over, and walked out of my office.

When Chris saw me leaving, he got up to follow me.

Outside the building, the car had been waiting for me.

I went to the driver’s side while Christ took the front passenger seat.

I started the engine, and we drove off. I passed by familiar places, and by midnight, I parked outside

Briana’s house.

The lights were off, and I could not hear any sounds from the inside. “Why are we at Mr. Ford’s house?”

Chris wondered aloud.

Lonly looked at him menacingly, and he made the motion of zipping his mouth.

Perched from the driver seat, I waited. Seconds turned to minutes, and minutes turned to hours.

Sometimes, I would get out of the car to take a whiff of a cigarette to ease my boredom and calm my nerves as I watched outside the house where my wife and children live.
