Chapter 5
I curled my lips into a mocking smile, my voice so cold and detached that no emotion could be heard. “Dead. It died while you were busy saving Jodie,” I replied.
Losing my child for the second time, I was far calmer than in my past life.
This was our first meeting since I was reborn.
When I looked at him, my gaze was ice–cold.
The love I’d carried for seven years was gone, replaced by a hatred that had sunk deep into my bones. Scenes from my previous life flashed before my eyes.
Beneath the blanket, my fingernails dug painfully into the palms of my hands.
I forced myself to stay composed, determined not to lose control in front of him.
Zayne knew just how much I cherished our child.
So, when he heard my words, he didn’t believe me. His first reaction was anger.
“Are you kidding me? Is this some sort of joke that never ends?” he said.
Sensing something wrong, he stepped back and glanced at the number on the hospital room door. He stepped back inside.
His voice was sharp as he demanded, “Why aren’t you in the maternity ward? Why are you in the emergency room? What’s going on?”
The blame in his voice was so obvious, as if I had committed some kind of grave mistake.
He sounded like I had wasted their precious medical resources.
Robert, who had been watching the scene unfold, finally couldn’t stand it anymore.
He couldn’t believe this was the same doctor he had personally trained.
Taking a couple of deep breaths, he bellowed, “Is this how you fulfill your responsibility as a husband? You let your wife end up like this, and you didn’t even react to her desperate call for help. How am I supposed to trust you with any of our patients? Get out there and apologize to the media right now.‘ Zayne’s eyes widened.
He retorted, “Apologize for what? She’s lying. Let her go explain it herself if it’s such a big deal. “What crime have I committed? My only crime was marrying a woman who throws fits every day and drives me crazy.
Robert was infuriated.
He shouted, “Have you ever seen the video online? Do you even know why you’re here today? If the video were fake, why would the hospital be getting roasted like this? Are you saying the rest of us don’t have a brain?
“Are we all just sitting around doing nothing? How did you turn into this, Zayne?”
His voice dripped with disappointment.
From what I remembered, Robert had always been a gentle, respected elder in Zayne’s mind.
Judging by the shocked expression on Zayne’s face, this was likely the first time Robert had ever shown him such coldness.
When Zayne spoke again, his voice faltered.
He said, “What do you mean? What about the video? Isn’t it just some lie Eliza made she found online?”
He hadn’t even bothered to check the news. He had rushed straight to the hospital room just to yell at up from something me.
My heart was filled with mockery, and my expression grew even colder.
Robert’s chest heaved with anger.

He pulled out his phone and found the video online.
He held it up to Zayne’s face as he pressed play.
The footage was crystal clear. I was seen crawling out of the driver’s side window of the car.
The thick smoke and fire were undeniable.
The road was stained with blood.
My belly was crushed and deformed.
The video ended with an explosion.
Zayne staggered a little.
He stared blankly at the screen.
It took him two full minutes before he found his voice.
When he finally turned to look at me, his accusatory tone was gone, replaced by guilt and shame.
