Chapter 455
I quickly looked away, my heart pounding. It all happened so fast, and I wasn't ready for any of it.
Ethan was a lot different than I remembered. He'd outgrown his youthful recklessness and settled into a more mature presence.
But was I ready to let someone in again?
The bad memories from my past life-full of hurt, injustice, and despair-still haunted me. Those scenes kept looping in my mind, and I couldn't stop feeling uneasy. "Evelyn, are you alright?" Kevin's voice, full of concern, broke through my thoughts.novelbin
I shook myself out of it and forced a small smile. "I'm fine, just need a quick break. Don't mind me. I'm going to take a breather outside."
I hurried out of the venue. The quiet of the night only made my anxiety worse. I wandered down the street, lost in my thoughts.
I spent the last few years pouring everything into my career just to prove myself. Love was the last thing on my mind, but Ethan's return stirred up a whirlwind of emotions. Everything about him-the way he looked at me and smiled-tugged at my heart.
"You seem kind of low today, Ms. Wiley."
I heard a familiar voice behind me and turned around fast. Ethan had somehow snuck up behind me, wearing a faint smile.
I arched an eyebrow, playing it cool as I teased, "Mr. Grayson, are you actually concerned about me?"
"Of course." Ethan drew nearer, his shadow stretching out beneath the streetlight. "You've been working hard on your career by yourself for years. It must've been tough."
I paused, surprised he'd even mention it.
I shrugged it off. "It's been fine. Luckily, I've finally made it. I should thank you, though, for offering your help back then without holding the past against me. It helped me grow." "It's nothing." Ethan grinned. "Your achievements are all on you."
My heart skipped a beat.
"Hey, how about we go for a drive? The night view of Lendora is stunning." Ethan changed the topic. "I just got a new car and haven't really driven it yet. Would you be my first passenger?"
I hesitated, wondering if it was a bit
much to go for a late-night drive with Ethan alone. But then again, we were partners at work, so it seemed fine. Plus, work had been suffocating me. I could use a chance to unwind.
"Sure, I'd love to, but..." I left it at that, offering a smile and a nod before following Ethan to the parking lot.
A sleek sports car caught my attention from afar.
"What do you think of my new ride? Not bad, huh?" Ethan asked, looking proud.
I got a better look. It was a Ferrari, bright yellow with that prancing horse on the hood.
"This is one of Ferrari's classics-a
6.2-liter V12 engine, naturally aspirated, Ethan said, clearly excited. went through a lot to get it. It's@global limited edition. And... if you're into it, I could let you have it!"
He had his chin resting on his hand, looking a little reluctant.
"Alright, enough with the specs," I interrupted, getting impatient.
Men and cars had always been a combination that gave me a headache.
But for some reason, I suddenly felt this urge. Well, I've been learning to drive lately. How about a race?" patted the larger car parked next to the Ferrari, which looked like a beast in black.
