Chapter 136: They met Again
Astrid's POV
My palms grew clammy as I drew nearer to the Silvermoon Pack's relief brigade. My heart thundered in my ears as memories of the past that I had tried so desperately to outrun threatened to overwhelm me.
Even though I knew that Killian would not be among them, the very sight of the Silvermoon Pack's sigil filled me with dread that I thought I had long since buried.
Steg my nerves, I forced one foot in front of the other, willing my trembling limbs to obey. I was nervous because I was afraid that one of them would recognize me, and right now, I'm not in the right capacity to be reminded of the past. Alpha Theron sent me here to keep my mind busy and to stop me from living in the past, a thing that I could never change. I'm not recovering because I'm still stuck in the past.
However, instead of finding my new sense of purpose, I ran into my past instead.
How I longed to simply turn and flee, to hide my face away from them, but I know I cannot do that. As the leader of the Shadowfang Pack's relief efforts, it is my duty to meet with them to coordinate the aid they will give to the Emberwood Pack. As I approached the group, I felt the weight of their gazes upon me; their curious and suspicious gaze was palpable.
Still, I continued fighting the urge to shrink back. Instead, I lifted my chin, meeting their scrutiny with a facade of calm confidence.
"Greetings to the members of the Silvermoon Pack!" I began, surprised at how steady my voice sounded. "I am Astrid, here on behalf of the Shadowfang Pack to welcome your aid and assistance."
I steeled myself, mustering all my courage and confidence to be able to stand straight in front of them while they shared quizzical stares at each other.
Of course, they all recognized me. I used to be their Luna, after all. It would be impossible for them not to know me, no matter how much I wish it to be true.
When I was still the Luna of the Silvermoon Pack, I was so involved with their military training that all their Pack Warriors naturally knew who I was.
All of them were looking at me like they had just seen a ghost. When they heard that I was here on behalf of the Shadowfang Pack, I knew that statement raised questions in their heads.
With the rumors flying around that I'm having an affair with Alpha Theron, they might be thinking that those rumors were true.
"I wish to speak with your leader to discuss and coordinate with your team so that we can give our best to help the Emberwood Pack," I said confidently and with a straight gaze. Finally, the leader of their relief brigade stepped forward, his piercing gaze seeming to bore into my very soul. I felt my breath catch in my throat, but I refused to look away.
"Nice to meet you, Astrid of the Shadowfang Pack," Killian rumbled without a change of expression on his face when he saw me. "We are honored to lend our strength to your efforts. Tell us what we can do so we may coordinate our relief for the Emberwood Pack." Please check at N/ôvel(D)rama.Org.
I swallowed hard as I stared at Killian unblinking.
What is he doing here? Why is he here? Many questions flooded inside my head as I looked at him in surprise.
"I see you have already set up
everything. If you could explain what you have already done and what we can do, then that would be helpful for us Killian continued to talk straight while my heart beat rapidly inside me.
I blinked and nodded my head when I caught myself acting inappropriately. I was ready to face Beta Ryder, the Beta of the Silvermoon Pack, but I was met with Killian instead.
I made a mistake. I thought Killian would never personally take a matter like this. If I knew, I wouldn't have faced him head-on.
However, it was already too late. He already knew that I was the person in charge, and I had no choice but to continue coordinating with him instead of running away.
"A-Alpha Killian," I finally uttered a word after a long pause. However, the confidence I mustered in me had finally disappeared. My voice came out uncertain and reluctant.
"Miss Astrid, why don't we show
Alpha Killian around first so he would see the temporary facilities we made for the people," the Pack Warrior who came alongside me spoke softly into my ear.
If he hadn't given me such a suggestion, I wouldn't know what to do. Seeing Killian made my mind turn back.
"Alpha Killian, follow me, and I will show you around," I finally mustered.
Killian nodded his head without saying a word. He is acting like he doesn't know me, keeping things professional between us.
This only reminded me of the same treatment he gave me when we were still a husband and a wife.
With this, relief and trepidation warred within me.
I showed Killian around the camp as I had told him. As he learned new things about how we managed everything around here, he gave orders to his men to help us.
As I explained everything to him, I turned more relaxed as he continued to listen quietly.
