Chapter 50 Hell to Earth
“I remember it was over here,” the voice behind her was bright and determined, “Wasn’t it, Lexie?”
Lexie was slightly stunned and finally turned to look at Myles.
“Long time no see,” The man in front of her was a head taller than Lexie, handsome and bright. After eight years of absence, he was more mature, and he looked at Lexie with a big smile on his face.
Lexie looked at him in amazement.
[How did you get here?]
Eight years ago, Myles’ family emigrated abroad, and she thought she would never see them again.
In Lexie’s twenty-nine years of life, Myles was one the people who were nice her, like a small sun almost brightened her entire youth. In her most isolated time, he was the one who steadfastly stood by his side.
The rich aroma of coffee spread from the coffee bar next to the library.
Lexie examined the man for a long time, still thinking it was a dream.
“Lexie, I know I’m quite good looking, but I’m going to blush if you keep looking at me like that,” Myles winked towards her with a teasing look.
Lexie couldn’t help but give him a blank look.
[And you haven’t changed your narcissism at all.]
“Take that as a compliment,” Myles smiled cheekily and glanced sideways out the window, “The country has changed quite a bit, and I’m relieved that you’re working in a good place.”
[When did you get back?]
“It’s been a while, but I’ve been busy with work transfer procedures before, and if I’d known your grandma was in the hospital, I would have come to see you sooner and been able to help.”
Work transfer?
Lexie looked at him in dismay, [You go back to work in the country?]
“Of course, do you think I’d come back for travel?”
[Then your parents …]
Halfway through Lexie’s gesture, she suddenly realized that it wasn’t good.
Myles gave a bitter smile, “My mom … died two years ago.”
Lexie’s face stiffened, [Sorry.]
When Myles suddenly emigrated, one of the most important reasons was his mother’s poor health, requiring constant treatment abroad, so Myles’ father simply sold his company at home and the family moved abroad.
“It’s okay,” Myles smiled in a fake light-hearted way, “it’s been two years, and my mom had suffered a lot, so maybe this is a relief for her.”
Lexie suddenly felt bad in her heart.
Myles’ mother, whom she had met, was an exceptionally gentle mother, and it was because of such a mother that she was able to teach a child with such a warm and bright personality as Myles.
Myles suddenly stretched out his hand and snapped his fingers in front of Lexie, startling her.
[What are you doing?]
“Don’t make such a mournful face, will you? I have to comfort you. When I was in high school, I broke my leg and you cried, others thought I bullied you…”
Lexie let out a laugh.
“Well, enough about me, how are you doing?”
[I …]
Without waiting for Lexie to speak, her cell phone suddenly rang, interrupting Lexie’s gesture.
The word ‘Jack’ on the caller ID landed in Lexie’s eyes, and her heart thudded, suddenly having a not-so-good feeling.
“Mrs. Howard, are you in the library now?”
Lexie tapped on the back of the phone in response.
“That’s good, Mr. Alan asked me to arrange for someone to send some wedding candy to your colleagues, it’s almost there, then I’ll have someone send it directly.”
Lexie showed an incredulous look.
Had she misheard? Alan arranged for someone to distribute the wedding candy to her colleagues?Content © NôvelDrama.Org 2024.
“What’s wrong?” Myles asked with concern.
Looking at Myles’ clean and bright eyes, Lexie’s heart inexplicably grew a hint of bitterness, she tapped again on the back of the phone, and hung up.
“What’s wrong?” Myles asked again, “Why do you look so pale?”
Lexie shook her head and forced herself to stay calm.
[It’s okay, I need to get back to the office to deal with something, so I can’t stay with you.]
“Oh, okay, then you go ahead, I don’t need your company,” Myles sighed in relief and leaned back in his chair with a smile, “I’ll sit here for a while before I go back, I’ll come to you some other time.”
[Okay]
Lexie nodded and as she was just getting up, Myles called out her again.
“Aren’t you forgetting something?”
Lexie froze, showing a puzzled look.
[What?]
Myles shook his phone, “Won’t you leave me a contact?”
The afternoon sun was shining, the way Myles smiled made Lexie feel as if she had been pulled back to earth from the edge of hell in this moment.
Sitting by the window, Myles looked at the verified Wechat on his phone, then put down his phone reassuringly, and when he picked up his cup, he saw Lexie returning to the library, and he couldn’t help but raise a smile on his face again.
Why was this girl still as wooden and silly and cute as she was back then?
As soon as she returned to the office, Lexie was swarmed by his colleagues.
“Lexie, why didn’t you tell us?”
“That’s right, you are mysteriously.”
“You husband must be handsome and rich, right?”
“Bring him over some day and we’ll meet.”
The voices fell on her ears, and Lexie revealed a bewildered face.
Because she couldn’t speak, she usually didn’t interact much with her co-workers, who weren’t hard to get along with but really weren’t close to her either, and it was the first time she had been surrounded so suddenly.
“Lexie must have married to a good husband, look how thoughtful her husband is, he even sent someone to deliver the wedding candy.”
As the words fell, Lexie saw the wedding candy box on nearest desk, red carved openwork small wooden box, in lantern shape, delicate and elaborate, look very upscale.
She understood instantly.
The man in charge of distributing the wedding candy was dressed in a suit, assistant-like, but it was the first time Lexie had seen him.
After distributing the wedding candies, he respectfully asked Lexie, “Mrs. Howard, Jack had me sent more, where is the left to be placed?”
At this, her colleagues looked at Lexie with envious faces.
Lexie forced herself to calm down and pointed towards her desk.
[Just leave it there.]
The man who brought the wedding candies immediately nodded, then put the rest of the candies on Lexie’s desk, “Mrs. Howard, then I’ll leave first.”
Lexie said thank you, wishing that he could not leave quickly.
Once he left, the atmosphere in the office became a bit weird, with a group of people looking at each other with different expressions.
Someone uttered, “Let’s wish Lexie a happy marriage!”
As these words fell, others wished Lexie a happy marriage.
Lexie barely smiled in response, but she was uneasy.
What exactly did Alan mean by doing this?
