My Mute Wife

Chapter 47 You Remembered?

It was already dawn when Lexie woke up.

The man had left at some point, the sheets still warm. She tried to move, her body aching as if it had been crushed.

Lexie clutched the sheet and managed to sit up, and after a moment of dizziness, she looked at the light on the curtains with a stony expression and thought of what Alan said last night.

“Remember, once you’re in the Howard family, I’m the only one who can decide when to tell you to get out.”

Lexie clutched the sheet with a death grip.

Was she destined to be held in check all her life?

No, she had to change things, even if it was for Grandma’s sake, she couldn’t go on like this.

As she was thinking, her phone suddenly rang.

Peter’s voice rang out on the other end of the phone, very cold, “Go back home right now, I have something for you.”

Looking at the hung-up call, Lexie frowned.

She knew Peter must blame her for what happened on the day of his birthday banquet.

Just as well, she had something to see him about.

When Lexie arrived home, the maid informed her that Peter was in the backyard.

“Like I said, I have a use for keeping her, not just the one role of keeping her by Alan’s side.”

“What use can she have? You’ve raised her for so many years, it is not fair for Edith.”

Lexie walked to the door of the backyard and heard the sound of men talking from the courtyard through a screen.

It’s Edith’s uncle Asher Cooke.

Asher especially doted on Edith, his niece, and was now losing his temper with Peter, ”Peter! Don’t forget, Edith’s mother got depressed because of her! Are you going to let Edith repeat the same mistake?”

“This is absolutely impossible, Edith is my favorite daughter, otherwise I wouldn’t have let Lexie marry into the Howard family for her, you know what kind of person Alan is. ”

Hearing these words, Lexie’s feet froze in place, and a cold wind swept through her heart.

Yes, everyone knew what kind of person Alan was. Knowing that to marry to Alan was a disaster, Peter still let her do it.

Asher said, “Since she had married into that family, break off relations with her, I do not want Edith to see her.”

“That won’t work, even if she married someone other than Alan, our relationship can’t be broken.”

“Why?”

“You forget, for that prescription, she’s the only clue.”

Lexie’s heart stuttered.

She confirmed that she had heard correctly that Peter had said that she was the only clue to the prescription.

Lexie did not dare to listen more, in order to avoid alarming the two, so she walked back to the living room and wait, pondering the two people’s conversation, and she felt there was something wrong.

It didn’t take long for Peter to send Asher away, only to come out and see Lexie in the living room.

“When did you get back?” He looked odd.

Lexie explained calmly.

[It’s been a while, the maid said you have a visitor, so I waited here.]

After explaining, she gave a nod towards Asher behind Peter as a greeting.

Asher coldly snorted and swept a contemptuous glance at her, not even saying a word, and walked straight away.

After sending him away, Peter only came back and sat down, and the maid came and served tea.

[Dad, what did you want me to come back for?]

“Edith has told me that you were the one who pushed her down at the party.”

Peter’s expression was extremely serious, and the way he looked at Lexie was not even as polite as looking at a stranger.

Lexie, however, was calm, [What the truth is depends on who you believe in, and no matter what I say, you believe what Edith says, don’t you?]

It’d been like that since she was a kid.

Even when she first went to the suburban winery when she was a child, she was pushed by Edith into the pool that wasn’t filled with water, knocking her head to the ground, no matter how she insisted it was Edith who pushed her, it was settled after Edith said, “It was sister fell down by herself.

Edith did not even apologize.

Peter felt awkward said in a deep voice, “What are you saying? You are older than Edith, you are her older sister, you should be tolerant to her.”

[So if she kills someone and sets fire in the future, you’ll definitely let me take the blame for her?]

Just like this time when she was asked to marry into the Howard family.

Lexie had always had a meek temper and had hardly ever been this aggressive.

Peter froze for a moment, and suddenly became annoyed, slapping the table and scolding, “You’re thinking you have Alan as your backer now, so you dare to say anything? Don’t you forget that you’re from the Mitchell family.”

Looking at Peter’s furious look at this moment, Lexie became calm.

[Dad, I’ve been dreaming about my mom for the past two days.]

Peter’s gaze lingered, not knowing if it was because of guilt or what, the sulk on his face dissipated a bit, “Your mother has been gone for many years, after that big illness, don’t you remember nothing?”

Lexie looked meek.

[I seem to have remembered something recently.]

Peter froze and looked at her in surprise, “What have you remembered?”

Lexie said carefully, [I have recurring dream, inside the dream, my mother seems to take me to the mountains to pick herbs, and keeps making me carry a …]

“What?”

[Prescription.]

Peter stood up from the sofa in a moment, looking at Lexie with surprise and joy, “Prescription? You remembered it?”

Lexie was stunned and had a complicated look.

Before she came, she had already prepared her words, so as to get the cause of her mother’s death out of Peter’s mouth, in fact, she wasn’t sure if it was related to the so-called prescription, but it was just a bet.

But by the looks of it, it was the right bet.

The car drove all the way to the Mitchell family’ winery on the outskirts.

In the back seat of the car, Peter consoled Lexie, “It doesn’t matter if you can’t remember, I will take you to see something, and you will be able to remember when you see it.”

Lexie nodded meekly, looking sideways out the window as her thoughts tumbled.

What was the prescription? What was the connection with herself? Why Peter impatiently bring her to come to the suburban winery?

The words echoed all the way through her head – she was the only clue to the prescription.

The only clue?

Did this mean that Peter has kept her in the Howard family all these years because of the clue?

The car drove to the winery, and Peter took Lexie directly to the study that day.

Looking at the direction of the bookcase, Lexie’s face instantly sank, forcing herself to hold back to question Peter about the matter of the tablet and formations behind that bookcase.

“Lexie, come here,” in front of Lexie, Peter directly opened the safe under the desk and took out an envelope from it, handing it to her, “Open it and take a look.”

In her heart, Lexie vaguely guessed something.

“This is our family’s heirloom herbal formula.”

Lexie clenched her hand.

The thing that Alan had gone to great lengths to find was this.
