Justin made a cup of coffee for Vera. Vera took a few sips absentmindedly. Her face twisted into a slight frown–either the bitterness or the unfamiliar brand disagreed with her.
She said, “Christopher committed suicide.”
Justin, calm as ever, replied, “You should stop targeting Skylar. If things escalate again, they won’t be as easy to manage as this time.”
To them, Christopher’s suicide was insignificant. He was just an ordinary, greedy man. He played the game poorly and ended up losing his life–he brought it upon himself.
Vera’s face darkened. “I didn’t expect this mess. I just wanted him to show up and maybe make Skylar leave Joe. But he went and kidnapped her. Even worse, he accomplished nothing.”
“The last time I saw Skylar, she seemed very sharp. She probably sensed something was off. You should keep your distance from both her and Joe for a while,” Justin added. Whether Vera listened or not, he felt it was necessary to warn her.
Vera scowled and frowned impatiently. “Of course she’s smart. How else could she latch onto Joe and never let go?”
These were things Vera could only say to Justin. If she vented to anyone else, they would think that Vera was too concerned about Skylar’s presence. To most people, Skylar was just an ordinary person. She was not worth Vera’s attention.
“Maybe Joe likes her,” Justin suggested.
“Impossible!” Vera quickly denied it. Her face turned pale.
Realizing she might have said too much, she silently finished her coffee with a cold expression.
The next few days passed in a blur of busyness for Skylar, her schedule packed from morning till night. By Friday, Skylar had planned to skip lunch to catch up on work, but her close colleagues invited her to a nearby barbecue joint.
Caleb was exhausted, his eyes bloodshot from fatigue. He mentioned wanting to have a barbecue to regain his energy, so he agreed to join his colleagues for some team–building over lunch.
The group of ten or so filled the largest private room at the barbecue restaurant. The place had a unique style, and the food was exceptionally good.
Skylar took the opportunity to snap a photo and send it to Natalie. She suggested they come here for a meal after Natalie’s return. This belongs to NôvelDrama.Org - ©.
After a short while, Skylar felt overly full and bloated, so she went to the restroom. Once she emerged, she took a moment to get some fresh air at the entrance.
As she did, Natalie replied to her message. The two chatted on WhatsApp for a while.
Natalie said, “Skye, Mr. Powell has been asking me to rehearse with him a lot these past few days. Do you think he thinks my acting is good? Should I consider debuting?”
It seemed Austin’s compliments had stirred Natalie’s ambition regarding her acting career. Skylar didn’t
want to dampen Natalie’s enthusiasm. She said, “The day you debut, I’ll be your biggest fan.”
Natalie replied, “Skye, I love you more than anything!”
After chatting a bit more, Skylar felt her stomach settle and decided to head back to the private room. As she did, she overheard a conversation between two people nearby.
“Rowan left his family and went against them for you. It seems like he’s really set on marrying you. You’re quite something. How did you manage to make him so devoted to you?”
“I didn’t do anything. I actually didn’t want him to have a fallout with his family.”
“That’s true. After the fallout, without his family’s support, who knows what the future holds for him…” Jenny’s friend’s words trailed off, leaving the rest unsaid.
