Marrying my high school bully

Knight in shining armor

“So what story do you want me to read to you?” I placed two books in front of Lilly who was peering at me with her huge black eyes.

Before bringing her over here, I got books that I’d be reading her to sleep and some other helpful toys. I didn’t want my precious daughter to lack anything, as long as I could provide it.

“Tell me, daughter,” I urged her gently.

Her little fingers closed around a big colorful book and I chuckled. Kids would always be kids. If only she knew that the other one besides the one she chose was more interesting, she’d have gone for it.

“I… I yike this one.” She babbled, flashing her little set of white teeth at me.

She was so adorable and charming. I don’t think I could ever be mad at her one bit.

“We’ll go with this then,” I said and began to read a story about Jack and the Beanstalk. I read to her slowly and watched her eyelids meet each other, her face turning to the side as she slept off.

A smile spread on my lips as I shook my head. Some minutes ago, she asked me to read her a story and now she was resting peacefully.

What more could I ask for, apart from having Melissa with me?

I recalled our horrible conversation that happened during the day and hollowness sank into the pit of my stomach. I wonder why she wasn’t consistent with what she felt for me.

I knew that she was deeply attracted to me, but then, there was an invisible wall standing between us and if it wasn’t pulled down, I doubted I’d ever have access to her heart.

There was no point denying that I felt something strong for the auburn-haired woman. Being around her brought peace to my demons, and at the same time, she stirred up feelings that had been buried within me for a long time.

Only one woman wielded such power over me and she was gone. I wasn’t even interested in placing charges against her anymore.

I just wanted peace with the people I loved.

As I strolled to the living room, my phone rang in my sweatpants. I groaned, wondering who could be calling me at past 9 pm.

My eyes widened when the name glared on my screen. I picked it up without hesitation, but the sound of her uneven breathing made me alert.

Something was wrong.

“Dexter,” She called without her usual confident tone, her voice lower than a whisper. “I-I need your help.” She stuttered and something within me snapped.

She was in danger and there was no way I’d let anyone hurt her. “Where are you?” I asked, taking the stairs in twos as I headed for my bedroom.

“I… I… can’t talk. I’m scared.”

“Sweetheart,” I said to calm her down. “I know that you are scared, but can you share your location with me? It will be faster that way.” I asked in the most gentle tone I could muster as I armed myself with a shotgun and a combat knife.

With a deep sigh, she said. “I can do that.” Then the line went dead.

I jogged back downstairs, my heart becoming more unsettled by the minute. Every second I wasted here brought her close to danger, but then I remembered Lilly who was sleeping all alone in her room, and a conflict of interest arose in my mind.

Fortunately, the new nanny I employed was just already packing her things and getting ready to leave, so I was in luck.

“Can you wait, Mrs Madeline?” I asked politely and she halted.

“What can I help you with, sir?”

I quickly explained the situation to her and pleaded with her to stay back with Lilly and watch over her till I returned. I also warned her that if any ugly situation arose in my absence, she could run to the basement and hide.

I wasn’t completely satisfied with leaving my daughter all alone with her, but it was all I could do if I wanted to save Melissa from danger.

My phone beeped with her location popping on my screen and I let out a gasp. She was still far away from Beverly Hills at such an odd hour.

I couldn’t get there on time even if I wanted to, which was frustrating, but went ahead and started the car and drove off slowly as I thought of who to call, then I remembered that Wyatt lived around that area.

My tension eased as I sent a text to him, then switched gears and raced to save my woman.

MELISSA’S POV

Though my eyes were itching to shut off and my body wished to be oblivious of the world, I couldn’t allow it because I didn’t want to be chopped up by these strangers.

Dexter had informed me that he was already on his way, but I doubted that he’d get to me on time.

The wind howled, and the sounds of footsteps traipsing towards me got me moving to the backseat.

I couldn’t stay holed up in here, but I couldn’t come out at the same time so I decided to call Dexter again and inform him of my dreary situation.

If I eventually got out of it, I’d have to make it up to him for being a bitch.

The phone slipped off my hands when the headlights of a car flashed at me. The car steered towards the direction of my car while I watched it keenly from within. Thankfully, the windows of my car were tinted so I had the advantage of quickly calling Dexter to get to me fast.

The lights went off and I quickly picked up the phone and began to dial his number. Whatever car stopped right now couldn’t be here for my safety, maybe the person had a claw hammer which would make it easier to smash my windows and attack me.

I shivered at the thought, my heart melting into a puddle when he didn’t pick up. Then a knock came on the car window, causing me to jerk in fear. I wrapped my arms around myself and muttered a quick prayer that I could remember.

My spine stiffened in agitation. I clamped my trembling lips shut as I didn’t want anyone to know that I was in, but it seemed that my mission had failed because the knocks became insistent.

Dexter’s line became unreachable and then I realized that I was done for. Fortunately, my phone vibrated on the floor and I picked it up to read a relieving message from him.

I sighed when I saw him smirk at me through the window, but not before he glanced around meticulously. Fear had blinded my eyes from seeing that he had come to save me.

As soon as I opened the car door, I flung myself at him without holding back. His muscular arms snaked around my back and his familiar musky scent reminded me that I’d be alright.

“Thank you so much, Dexter. I don’t know what I’d have done if you hadn’t come.” I sobbed while he caressed my back, holding me gently like I was a precious substance that could get spoilt if rough-handled.

“It’s fine, Sweetie. Let’s get you home. You’ve been through a lot today.” He said tenderly and my heart nearly exploded with love for him.

How could he still be this sweet to me when I had done nothing but treat him badly?

Then I resolved in my heart, one that would decide if we were still going to be together.
