Father of two
Melissa
Waking up to meet Dexter pacing to and fro in front of me added to my nausea, but I felt better knowing that someone other than my father was genuinely worried about me.
I couldn’t wait to tell him about my pregnancy. He’s going to be so happy about being a grandfather.
Dexter halted his little parade and scooted over to scrutinize my face. “Thank goodness, you’re finally awake. I’ll go and get the doctor.” He exclaimed when he saw that I was awake and made to leave but I was quick to grab his wrist.
“Don’t go anywhere, Dexter. I’m fine. I fainted out of surprise because I couldn’t believe that I could get pregnant with the present state of my organs.” My throat was parched and my tongue felt like I hadn’t taken any liquid in days so I made a request. “Can you get me a glass of water?” I asked to evade the inevitable conversation.Content © copyrighted by NôvelDrama.Org.
There was a mug filled with water on the bed stand, so he poured it into a glass and handed it over to me without asking any questions.
I drank the water slowly, my heart thudding fast as I contemplated telling him who the father was. Doing that would make us closer because I knew that he had been searching for any opportunity to stay around me, but at the same time, I couldn’t deny him the right to be a father to his child.
He gave me the baby even when I didn’t believe it could be possible, so I would tell him the truth no matter what would be the result.
“Do you feel better now?” He asked nervously, covering my forehead with his palm to check my temperature.
“I’m good, Dexter, and knowing that I’m pregnant makes me feel perfect. I just want to go home and rest, though.”
“We can do that right away if that is what you want. You don’t need to be stressed in your condition.” He said.
I sighed and sat up straight. It was either now or ever.
“Why aren’t you asking me any questions?” There was a slight tremor in my voice because I was scared. “You don’t even know if you are the father.”
He pushed closer to me, his palm on my arm. “I’m not scared, Melissa, and the paternity of the baby isn’t the problem here. What I want to know is why you are so happy about this child. I’m not disregarding the fact that having a child is a blessing, but you seem so fulfilled.” He observed and I felt my eyes churn with tears.
I tried to talk but the words stayed put in my throat, so I took a deep sigh and began to wait for my emotions to settle.
“I was supposed to be infertile till death even though my gynecologist told me that I was getting better.”
His eyes popped as he cocked his head to the side with a puzzled expression on his face. “What do you mean?”
“I was poisoned by someone I thought to be a friend, and that affected my womb. There and then, I was told that my reproductive organs were damaged so I had to forget about having a child.” My fingers moved to my stomach again and this time, I felt a sense of fulfillment. “This baby is a miracle, Dexter. I’m yet to believe that I’m pregnant.” Tears of happiness gushed out of my eyes and I let them flow freely, not bothering to wipe them off.
This was the best news I’ve had in a while and I just wanted to run to a secluded place and scream my lungs out.
It would have been more satisfying if Dexter knew that I was Lorraine and he was able to get me pregnant.
“I’m happy for you, Melissa. You don’t know how much.” I searched his eyes and I saw the sincerity in them, though some glints of fear appeared behind his happiness.
“Thank you for your support, Dexter.”
He nodded and let out a sigh. He stood up and I knew the next question he was going to ask, so I got ready to respond, knowing that my answer could create a dent in our friendship.
“Melissa, I don’t intend to spoil your joy but I can’t stop myself from asking who the father of your unborn child is.” He asked gently and I felt the difficulty that accompanied his question.
I lowered my head and went into deep meditation. Dexter was the only man I’d slept with without using protection. I rarely had casual sex but each time I did, I made sure to be extra careful.
It was a different case with Dexter because I didn’t see the need to protect myself from him. I believed that he wouldn’t hurt me on purpose so I threw caution to the wind.
Besides, I never expected to get pregnant.
“Even if I’m not the father, have it at the back of your mind that I’ll always be around to make sure that you are fine. I won’t allow you to go through this alone.” He added when he noticed that I wasn’t saying anything.
It was time to tell him the truth.
“Dexter…” I paused and reached for his hands. “I’m not trying to hold you down and I’m not sure you will believe me, but you are the father of this child. You are the only man who made me throw caution to the wind, and I don’t regret it because we’ve made this miracle.”
His arms instantly went around me and he held me tightly, but not to the extent of me losing my breath.
“Oh God, Melissa. You’ve made me the happiest man on earth.” He gushed at me, his also becoming teary.
“Have I?”
He smiled and pulled away from me, then covered my hand with his on my stomach. “I’m not sure you understood how I felt when you told me that I couldn’t be with you. I was heartbroken because I thought I no longer stood any chance of being with you, but now I have and I can’t wait to drive you around for your ultrasound session, and clothes shopping. We are going to make a nursery together.”
The zeal burning through him was infectious and I hoped that he would maintain the same energy when he found out the truth.
“You sound more happy than I am. I’m already jealous that our child might love you more than you love me.” I pouted my lips even though I was giddy with excitement.
“Emilia and I didn’t have the chance to do all the fun things that came with expecting a baby. I don’t love her so everything we did was boring. The only reason I stayed with her was because I’d already decided that I would never turn my back on any woman who bore my child.”
Having him talk about Emilia slightly dampened my mood. “How are you going to cope with taking care of Lilly and being with me? It’s not gonna be easy and Emilia will get to know about our baby someday.”
I dreaded the day Emilia would find out about it, but I wasn’t the dumb woman she could poison. I was always five steps ahead of her.
“We can tell her now if you want us to.” He suggested but I shook my head vehemently in disagreement.
“Not yet. Let’s keep it a secret until it can’t be hidden anymore but I’ll have to tell my father about it.”
“As you wish, my lady. I have a question to ask though.” I encouraged him to ask. “You talked about getting poisoned, and that was the same thing that happened to Lorraine as well. It sounds like a coincidence but I want to know what year it happened.” He requested and I flinched in fear.
