Chapter 70
Chapter 70
Ethan’s cold eyes narrowed ever so slightly as he wondered, What does she mean by throwing her to the wolves? Wait a minute. Am I the wolf?!
Caroline looked at Alice helplessly, seemingly as if she wanted to speak but couldn’t.
Alice couldn’t stand it anymore and said, “Okay, let’s stop talking. Mommy will get you some milk. It’s late, and you need to sleep after drinking it.”
She opened the door and was startled to see someone with sharp features standing in front of her.
After hesitating for a split second, she decisively slammed the door shut.
Yes, she had indeed slammed the door shut.
Outside the room, Ethan quickly took a step back to avoid being hit in the face by the door. He was surprised and a bit incredulous that he had been locked out in such a rough manner.
“Mommy, what’s wrong with you?” Caroline looked at her with a puzzled expression. NôvelDrama.Org owns this text.
“I think I just had a hallucination. I shouldn’t be talking trash about people behind their backs. But seriously, I could have sworn I saw a ghost or something. It freaked me out!”
Just then, someone knocked on the door. The knocking persisted outside the room in a rhythmic pattern.
“Mommy, it seems like what you saw wasn’t just your imagination.” Caroline looked at Alice, then directed her gaze toward the door. The knocking was undeniably real.
Alice also heard the knocking, and it felt like a hammer pounding against her chest.
She had seen Ethan outside and intentionally slammed the door shut, hoping he would leave after that.
Though, she clearly had expected too much out of him. Ethan was never a tactful person.
He probably didn’t even know what ‘tactful’ meant.
The knocking continued relentlessly, leaving Alice with no choice but to reopen the door and feign innocence. “Hey there. I must have mistaken you for someone else earlier,” she said with an innocent expression.
Ethan looked at her skeptically, wondering how she could ever mistake someone of his size. Clearly, he didn’t trust Alice’s words.
However, he didn’t say anything. He walked into the room and approached Caroline with gentle eyes and a warm smile. “You must be Caroline,” he said in a soft voice.
Alice blinked her eyes subconsciously. It seems that different people have different destinies.
Ethan treated people differently, and the difference in treatment was very apparent.
However, Caroline was his relative, and since Alice had no relationship with Ethan, it was understandable.
“Yes, I am Caroline,” she said, looking at Ethan with a mix of uncertainty and curiosity. “Are you my uncle… or my dad?” she asked tentatively, unsure how to address him.
“I am your uncle, but you can call me Daddy,” Ethan replied as he didn’t dismiss her just because she was young. Instead, he wanted to make it clear as he explained to her.
“Okay, Daddy.” Caroline was not shy at all. It was clear that she wasn’t against calling him that and was eager to build a relationship with him.
“Caroline, you’re such a good girl,” Ethan said as he reached out and gently hugged her. He patted her back lightly, making sure to be gentle as he had no experience interacting with children and didn’t want to scare her.
Caroline leaned against him and asked softly, “Daddy, can you stay with Mommy and me since you’re back now?”
His voice was just as gentle when he replied, “Yes, I will be with you and Mommy at home tomorrow. It’s late now, so you should go to bed first, okay?” His voice was soft as if afraid of disturbing something.
“Okay.” She was obedient and sensible, so she went to bed obediently.
Ethan tucked Caroline in tenderly.
Alice was astonished by his gentleness. She couldn’t believe the once cold, stubborn, and sarcastic Ethan could also display such tenderness.
However, his attitude toward her was entirely different.
“Let’s talk,” Ethan said after making the bed for Caroline. He turned to face Alice, and his smile disappeared. His voice was no longer gentle like before, but instead, Alice’s description of Ethan as a cold, stubborn, and sarcastic man had returned.
She blinked in surprise at his sudden change, unable to process the shift in his attitude. It seemed like he could only spare her with his cold and harsh attitude.
“I’m exhausted. I can barely keep my eyes open,” Alice said, intentionally signaling to Ethan that she was not in the mood for talking.
Talk again? She remembered the last time he wanted to talk, but she was so angry that she looked like a pufferfish. Who would want to talk to him in the middle of the night? What could we even talk about? Doesn’t he realize how late it is? Even if he doesn’t need the sleep, I need it.
“I heard someone say that I’m cold, stubborn, and sharp-tongued,” he said, taking a step closer to her. His words were laced with coldness, which was a clear indication that he was still holding a grudge against her for what she had said earlier. “I also heard that I am infuriating to deal with, and someone even labels me as a wolf.”
Alice’s gaze darted toward Caroline, who lay in bed with her eyes squeezed shut, but it was apparent that she was still listening. Letting out a quiet sigh, Alice turned the doorknob and slipped out of the room.
She knew that Ethan was going to settle the score with her, but she couldn’t confront him in front of Caroline.
After exiting the room, the man shut the door, and his eyes immediately locked onto Alice’s.
She could sense that if they didn’t clear the air today, the problem would persist.
“Who told you that?” She gazed at him, her eyes blinking with an innocent and serene look.
Ethan stared at her, watching her put on an act. He wanted to see how long she could keep it up. What’s wrong? I thought you were brave enough to run your mouth like that. Are you scared now? Are you chickened out now? Too late for that!
“Who was it that had such keen insight and a sharp mind? The analysis was spot-on.” Alice suddenly smiled; her smile was joyful and radiant. Afraid? Non-existent. Chickened out? I have never chickened out in my life!
Ethan’s eyes flickered slightly, but he continued staring at her without saying a word.
“Mr. Knight, I know your family is powerful, but you can’t silence people from speaking the truth,” she said with a light and teasing tone.
In any case, she had held a grudge against him since their last encounter.
Who’s afraid of whom? Can’t people speak the truth anymore? She didn’t believe he could do anything to her. Could he beat me up? I bet not.
Alice had signed a contract that consisted of Ethan’s own proposal. According to the agreement, she would leave after six months, and they would have nothing to do with each other by then.
Ethan remained silent for a while as he continued to stare at her.
He had never encountered a woman like her before. In the past, the women in his presence were always gentle and understanding, attempting to please him at all times. Why is she so different from others?
