Chapter 34 Pay You back in an Unforgettable Way
"Mummy!"
That faint call came into her ears through the forest gripped her attention.
Hearing this, her pale face turned rosy gradually. She blinked and said in happiness, "Can you hear that? It's Ethan! He is calling me!"
"Yeah."
Golden turned to stare at her joyful face under the moonlight.
She had a delicate face, fair skin, scarlet lips, and watery eyes, occupying all his attention.
What attracted him most was her purity and detachment that made him feel familiar.
Her face was different from Margery five years ago, but her unique temperament was identical.
Margery didn't know what he was thinking but she knew that Ethan was close to her. Her anxiety was replaced by joy, giving her continuous power. She rushed by him and shouted, "Ethan, don't worry, mummy is here!"
After running for a long time, with the light from his torch, she could see a small silhouette in a pond.
"Ethan!"
"Mummy…"
Ethan raised his little head with bruises and muds, while his hands were clenched, bearing the pain from cuts, "Mummy, I'm all right. Please don't cry."
"Sorry, mummy is late."
She rushed to him with tears and crouched down on the muddy pond. When she found so many cuts from his face, neck, arms, and legs, she shivered, "Ethan…How did you get these cuts? Do you know I'm frightened when I can't find you? Do you have anywhere else hurt?"
"Mummy, I'm okay." Property © NôvelDrama.Org.
Ethan pushed her hands away when she wanted to hug him, tightened his lips, and stood up with all the pains. He was standing straight, straighter than that he was injured before.
"Good boy. Just don't be reluctant to tell me where you hurt so mummy can take a look."
She was still uneasy and bent down to check him from head to toe again and again. Making sure that there was no other injury, she took a look at his face with muds and bruises and couldn't tell anything similar to Golden, which relieved her.
Even Margery couldn't recognize him covering with dirt, let alone Golden.
Since Golden was still here, she felt sorry for no going to clean his face right now.
"Are you tired or hungry, Ethan? Let's go back to kindergarten to treat your injuries. Ms.Hall and Mr. Gray are worried about you."
When she was about to hold him in her arms, Golden stopped her.
He looked into Ethan's eyes carefully while talking to Margery, "Don't move him, his right leg has fractured."
Meanwhile, Ethan raised his head and gave a cold glance at the wordy man.
Golden raised his eyebrows at him, and Ethan's expression looked more indifferent. It seemed like he was hostile to Ethan.
He scrutinized his face for a while and recognized him as the boy who once shot some dirty water at him in the hospital somewhere in a southern city. Recalling that he was also the guy who incited all his classmates to beat Layne up, he felt more complicated.
Now he knew Ethan disliked him and Layne.
But why?
Golden squinted. He was so eager to know more about the mysterious mother and son.
"Ethan, let me take a look whether you have a fracture."
Margery didn't notice the confrontation between two men when she was blaming herself. She was devoted to examine Ethan's right leg, and found a swelling on his leg. It touched soft and could felt a small piece of bone in it.
That must be extremely painful.
But her tough boy was trying to comfort her by saying he was fine.
Looking at her son, she became tearful with a mixed feeling of pride and distress, "Sorry, Ethan. I don't know you suffer so much… Tell mummy, is there any other injury?"
"That's all, mummy," Ethan shook his head.
But she couldn't believe him and made another scrutiny on him, and felt relieved when she couldn't find more.
However, she still felt sorry for him. Unlike most of the kids who had the accompany of their parents, he and Bonnie only had Margery.
But she had severe burns to her skin and needed to take skin grafting frequently in the hospital, leaving her no time to take care of them.
Bonnie was a naïve girl who only cared about eating and fantasizing. She needed the protection of a man and made Ethan a tough guy who always held back his tears.
'Golden Barrett, don't fancy that I will forgive you because of this.'
'My hatred for you won't fade away until death falls on one of us!'
Margery hugged Ethan carefully and realized he was in agony when she could feel him quivering. She couldn't help but cry, "Sorry, Ethan. It's my fault not taking care of you."
"Don't cry, mummy. I am fine."
Ethan reached out his hand and wiped her tears with his cleanest finger.
…
Margery was so weary when they were walking down the mountain. She felt her legs were soft, but still insisted on holding Ethan and rejecting Golden's assistance.
"Thank you, Mr. Barrett. But I can hold my own kid."
Golden didn't put her bad manner in mind. He put his hand in the pocket and held the torch with another hand, and smiled, "Dr. Byrne, I help you find the kid. What's my reward?"
Margery ignored him.
Going back to kindergarten, Margery put Ethan in her backseat of the car steadily and gave a fake smile to Golden, "Don't worry, Mr. Barrett. I will pay you back in an unforgettable way."
