Chapter 15 Remorse

“Everyone, you might have questioned the reason we made this dinner today.”

He smiled, and while he waited to speak, the servant took a huge champagne bottle in.

“Happy anniversary, Seth and Leah. Yes, we didn’t forget that.” he smiled.

Dad had a little speech, and we all got a glass of champagne in our hands when he finished.

We all went to them to congratulate, except Alice. She was an outsider. She got her champagne as well, and she lifted it up together with us, but she didn’t drink, not even a sip.

“Well guys, I am more than happy, but I can’t drink, as I have to drive back home. Please forgive me.”

I said, but my mum looked at me in disbelief,

“Gideon, this is a family event. You can’t just drive away from here. We are all going to sleep in this house tonight, and there is no excuse.”

“But mum, you said that you are renovating half of the house, you have not enough space for all of us.”

Sloane said, and that just made mum angry a little.

“We have enough space, young lady. Everyone has a room to sleep in. Seth and Leah will share Seth’s bedroom. Ava will have a guest room. Gideon has his own room. Alice can share a bed with Lily in the servants quarter. Isn’t that simple?”

I closed my eyes for a minute. I didn’t want to admit I didn’t like the idea at all, so I nodded.

“Okay mum, so we are staying”

I had a secret look at Alice, but she was motionless, just like since we arrived. She didn’t care where she was going to sleep.

“And just to avoid you to say that I haven’t organised the event, well I let you know, I moved Alice’s remaining things from your room, Gideon. So she can find everything at the servants‘ quarter.”

After this information, we started drinking, but I didn’t drink that much to get drunk. I wanted to control what I was doing; I had a good reason that. When it was late, Leah took Ava to sleep, and we played cards.

Alice moved to a corner sofa, and as I always had a look on her, I could see she struggled to keep her eyes open. She fought with her sleepiness.

Finally, when I saw her holding her head and I realised she seriously suffered, I told everyone I am tired. I wasn’t, actually. I always slept late. It was just… I didn’t want to torture Alice any longer.

“Alice, do you know where the staff quarter is?”

She looked at me and shook her head.

“I’ll show you.”

I walked to that part of the house.

I didn’t understand my feelings at all, but I felt guilt. Before she came, I was the one who said she deserved to be in comfort for her innocent life. And now, I was the one who sent her to a room where she has to share a bed with a servant.

It was hard, but I strolled to my room. It was Alice’s room while she was here. I went to take a shower, and I laid in my bed. It was comfy, like always. 1. turned around many times, but of course I couldn’t sleep.

Chapter 15 Remorse

felt like the only person in this house who I wanted to know about at that moment was my wife, Alice.

I tried to push the thoughts of her away, but I couldn’t. Eventually, I clenched my fist, and I punched in the bed. I got up, and I left the room…

I walked to the staff quarter. When I entered, I tried to walk as quietly as possible. The thick carpet let me do that, but I stopped at a corner because I heard a voice. That was her, that was Alice. She was with Lily. They sat on the thick carpet, Lily wrote something on a piece of paper and gave it to Alice. She laughed sadly. Her laugh was angelic. “Of course I didn’t want to come here. You know Lily, my mum made a few mistakes in her life. I think she shouldn’t have given birth to me after my dad left her.

“She lowered her head sadly. “Anyway. My stepdad was a cruel asshole. He’s got many dodgy businesses, and he hurt my mum many times. I think he was with us because of the comfort she gave him. He told me one day I have to come here, and I didn’t dare to argue with him.”

Lily wrote something to her. She smiled when she read that.

“Except for my family, I had a good life. My home was at the sports club where I was skating. I loved figure skating, and I was good at it, you know? I have been dreaming about the Olympic games since I was little. My trainer in Montreal always said that I could probably be in the first three. I worked so hard to make it happen.” She smiled sadly. “Last year I was a gold medalist in the world championship and since I could compete in adult competitions, I was always on the podium, but I had to come here. I think my career is over.”

She sighed and looked so unhappy. To hear this information about her miserable life, and see her sad face was like a kick straight into my stomach.

Lily wrote her something again.

Alice had a sad smile on, and she nodded.“I am scared, Lily, but there is not much I can do. I hope I can e myself.”

She took a deep breath.

Lily shook her head and held her hand.

“Lily, whatever is the reason they needed me, I’m sure that is not a good thing, well… at least not for me.”

Lily lowered her head and hugged her. She leaned her head on her shoulder and they stayed quiet.

I felt I was a horrible person for taking an innocent girl who had a future, who believed, who dreamed, worked a lot, and I decided all of this was over for her. I decided over her life like someone who got the right to do that. And what was worse, she was ready to finish “this” herself if there was not

other way out.

I fought with myself for a few more minutes, but finally I gave up. I walked in their direction. First Lily noticed me and she stood up, immediately followed by Alice.

“Alice, come with me.”

I ordered her, and she followed me without hesitation. She showered already. I could smell her sweet scent that made that unfamiliar feeling more intense, She wore black leggings and a white shirt. She walked with me and when I opened the room’s door; 1 motioned for her to enter. She did. She stood in the middle of the room while I went back to bed.

“Alice, come here and lie next to me.”

She raised her frightened gaze to look at me. Her reaction made me forget about myself, and I had to smile for a second.
