Chapter 47
Clayton:
Mother decided to leave the house a few days after my birthday. I thought it was timely; she had stayed in the house for quite a while and, during this period, had managed to completely denigrate Nadine, so that Nadine tried her best to avoid her during the final few days. But it was not just my mother Nadine avoided, she also avoided me. She stayed in her room most of the time and whenever she was compelled to be with us, say during dinner, she would avoid meeting my eyes and say as little as possible. I was okay with it because I was still pissed from the debacle at my birthday. On the day mother left, she called Natasha and Nadine downstairs for a brief meeting.
“It has been fun, ladies,” she said. “But I have to leave now as I have business to attend to. And I’m sure you have business to attend to. Or don’t you, Nadine?”
Nadine nodded timidly.
“My son’s welfare is in both your hands,” she said. “Take care of him as best as you can. I shall be talking to you both from time to time. And endeavor to reach out to me. Can you hear that, Nadine?”Copyright by Nôv/elDrama.Org.
Nadine nodded again.
“I’ll do my best, ma’am,” Natasha said, wrapping her hand around mine.
When my mother left, I got a call from Enzo . Since my birthday, he had been around the city, moving from one hotel to another. I had offered up my house but he refused on the grounds that he did not want to be intrusive.
“Hey, man,” I said as I picked up the call.
“Clayton,” he said. “I have some news.”
“What?” I asked, not at all curious.
“So my company is planning on expanding its shores,” he said, “and we’ve bought an acre of land in this city and are planning on building another branch of the company here.”
“Ohh,” I said. “That’s nice.”
“I know, right,” he said excitedly. “Plus, we get to see each other more and act more like the brothers that we are.”
“Yeah, that’s fantastic,” I said drily. “This makes me really happy. I’m happy for you and your company. Congratulations, man.”
“Ohh, thanks, Clayton,” he said. “You’re the best.”
He hung up and I breathed a sigh of discomfort. I was not interested in moving closer to my elder brother, even though he seemed keen on it. He would only get in my way, like he did during my birthday party when I tried to hit Nadine.
“Fuck this,” I said under my breath.
Nadine:
I had found a new friend, a suitable companion to combat the loneliness of my mind and the languor that bore down on my soul. This person was none other than Enzo . After the party, he lingered in the city, not returning to where he came from, moving from hotel to hotel. This made me glad. He called everyday to ask how I was and I would tell him how my day went, down to the most miniscule detail. Once, he followed me to the clinic to see Anna. She was almost done with her treatment and the day of her discharge had neared. When he spoke to Anna, she responded really well, in a way that made it obvious that they would get along. I told him everything – about my job, about my incarceration in the house, about Naomi and Anna. He listened like no one had ever listened to me. He called me that evening, like he always did.
“Nadine,” he said my name with such enthusiasm. “Guess what.”
“Ohh, please, Enzo ,” I said playfully. “I don’t do guesses.”
“Come on, Nadine,” he nudged. “Try.”
“Okay, one try,” he said. “You finally found someone? Like, a lady suitable enough for-”
“What?!?!” He said. “Ohh, please, Nadine, stop it.”
“Well, tell what it is, then,” I said resolutely.
“Okay,” he said. “So my company is opening up a new branch very soon to try to expand our business and all that.”
“Oh, wow,” I said, feeling genuinely happy for him. “That’s great. Oh, God, I’m so happy for you, Enzo . You deserve this.”
“That isn’t even the good news yet,” he said.
“Ohh?” I asked. “Then what is?”
“Well, the branch is opening up in this very city,” he said. “Which means I’m going to move here.”
“What?!?! Really?!?!” I said, stunned.
“Yup,” he said. “Which means I’m going to be close to you and…”
He trailed off with his words.
“Ohh, this is so good, Enzo ,” I said.
“I know,” he said. “So I was thinking, we could celebrate, you know? Just you and I, a little thing with some drinks. You could come to the hotel and we just say a few toasts. How about that?”
“Um, I don’t know, Enzo ,” I said, even though I very much wanted to.
“Come on, Nadine,” he said. “We won’t even take much time. Of course I would call Clayton, but we both know he’s gonna be too busy for stuff like this.”
“You’re right, he’ll be busy,” I said.
“So, are you gonna come?” He said, his voice almost bursting with expectation.
“Um, okay,” I said. “Text the address of the hotel and I’ll meet you there very soon. I’ll just have my bath.”
“Great,” he said, “excellent.”
I could hear the excitement in his voice and it tingled me.
Enzo :
I could lie to myself for as long as I wanted to, but I would only be denying myself something precious. The truth was that I was falling in love with Nadine and I couldn’t help myself. Of course I knew she was my younger brother’s wife, and it kind of hurt, but what else could I do. I couldn’t get my mind off her. When she agreed to visit me at the hotel, I was the happiest I had ever been.
“Finally,” I said to myself. “It’s all falling in place.”
