Chapter 22: Yes, I Have No Conscience
Alvera looked at herself in the mirror. The hickeys on her neck were ironic to her.
The fading white scars on her body contrasted sharply against her skin.
She clenched her fists, picked up a glass from the sink and threw it at the mirror.
The mirror was shattered.
She took off her bathrobe and went back under the shower, washing the areas on her body that Roland
had touched.
She felt disgusting.
She hated herself. She really hated herself.
After the shower, she stood in front of the broken mirror and re-examined herself.
The sadness in her heart was still overwealming.
She went back to the room, took out a handful of candy from a transparent box, and began stuffing
them into her mouth one by one.
Suddenly, her cell phone rang. It was Andrina.
She sneered and picked it up.
Andrina was screaming hysterically from the other end. "Alvera, you b*tch! How dare you touch
Roland. Just wait. I will make you pay. I will tear you apart!"
...
Alvera smiled indifferently and said, "You should thank me for reminding you. This is the last time I will
let you know. Next time, I'll keep him with me in bed."
"Alvera, you're just like your mother. Do you think that Roland will like you? He's just using you
because I can't be with him now. You're a just prostitute, you know that?"
"Andrina, I warned you before. You have no right to mention my mother. Listen, you won't have this
man unless I let you. Wait and see if you don't believe me," Alvera said coldly and hung up the phone.
...
She was determined to win Roland's heart.
The next morning, the door to Alvera's bedroom was suddenly pushed open loudly.
Alvera opened her eyes, no longer as jumpy as she was when she first got out of prison.
Roland was standing at the door.
She pursed her lips in a smile and said hoarsely, "Good morning, honey."
Roland stepped forward, leaned over her while pulling her blanket off, kissed her roughly, and bit her
lips.
Alvera frowned in pain and tried to push him off. "Roland Francois, what are you doing?"
"How dare you call Andrina last night?" He asked angrily.
Alvera frowned. "You guys really keep no secrets among yourselves."
"Alvera, I'm warning you, she hasn't recovered fully yet. You'd better not bother her, or else..."
"I know. It will only take you a few minutes to send me back to prison." She smiled.
"Don't smile."
"Why not? Should I cry instead? Or does Mr. Francois prefer crybabies? I'm sorry then, I can't cry, and I
won't cry in front of you."
She tried to push him away, but he was too strong for her.
"Mr. Francois, please get up," she said.
Roland's eyes were cold as he stayed motionless.
Alvera pressed her lips together. "Look, Mr. Francois, as I've said before, I'm not ready for this yet. You
forced me into this. Our marriage is just contractual, it's not real. If I didn't call Andrina last night, we
would have done it. I'm sorry if I not letting you cheat on my sister was wrong."
"You're sorry? You have no conscience, but you're sorry. Did you know Andrina almost died last night NôvelDrama.Org content rights.
because of your call?"
"No conscience..." She murmured under her breath while looking at him.
After a moment of daze, determination returned in her eyes.
"Yes, that's right, I have no conscience. Conscience has no value. Why would I want something like
that?" She said defiantly. "Do you know what it's like to go through hell and back, Roland Francois? Do
you know how painful it is to just give up after all that? If you don't, drop your holier-than-thou attitude."
...
"I never said I'm a good person, so I don't need anyone to teach me to be good," she continued. "Why
should I care whether Andrina Earhart lives or dies? So many people die every day. Should I be
concerned about them?"
"You..." Angered by her words, Roland raised his hand and slapped her in the face.
