Chapter 79: Being Pushed into the Water
Proofread by Yu Bing
Yuexi rents a car and drives a long way in the middle of nowhere and finally finds the remote village located in the mountains.
The road winding up all the way to the village is particularly difficult to drive. To make things worse, it rained last night, the steps leading to the village are now covered with a thick layer of moss, which makes her slip a few times. Yuexi has to cling to something within her reach to climb up carefully step by step.
Finally, she arrives at her destination–the village, but because the it is inaccessible, there are only some old men and children left in the village.
Yuexi inquires about her mother for a long time, but does not get any useful information. She is a little dispirited and disappointed, and finally decides to leave before sunset.
Standing on the top of a hill and looking down below, she can see a turbulent river roaring through the steep mountains rising above both sides of the river.
She is feeling sad. Her mother has been missing for ten years, and her efforts to know her whereabouts is now totally in vain: she still doesn’t know whether she is alive or not.
However, this is the only clue that is left to her. With the only clue gone, where can she find her mother now?
Yuexi collapses down on the mountain slope, feeling sad for herself, totally at a loss what to do next. Immersed in her own thoughts, she faintly hears some rustling noise from behind. She looks back subconsciously, before she could see clearly who is that person coming in her direction, she feels a pair of hands pushing her from behind.
Yuexi yells. There is no time to react, before she can do something, she already loses balance, and slips down along the hillside. In moment of fluster, she clumsily grabs a stone, its sharp edge cutting her hand.
Stung by the sharp pain, she becomes clear headed now. She looks up only to see a shadow standing there, anxiously walking two steps forward, and then disappearing out of sight.
Who wants to kill her?
Her hand gradually losing strength and unable to cling to the rock, Yuexi is now filled with despair. She still leaves a lot of things undone. She never thought she would die so young.Contentt bel0ngs to N0ve/lDrâ/ma.O(r)g!
If I knew it, I would…
Before she has time to think more, she loses her grip on the rock and goes tumbling down the slope. She yells, and then with a thump, she falls into the water.
She paddles desperately, and now she can feel the water flowing over her head, which makes her cough uncontrollably. The turbulent water carries her body to the middle of the river. In a panic, she feels her hands clutching something like a log. Instinctively, she puts all her weight on the log and begins to float along.
The log is carried by the swift currents, and she clings to it tightly, praying that it is not a waterfall or something like that.
She doesn’t know how long she has been drifting with the current. Her sight has finally recovered and she sees from afar a huge rock in the middle of the river, and the log under her is about to collide with it. She measures the time carefully and then suddenly she lets go of the log and clings to the rock tightly.
In the ear rings the wind whizzing past, accompanied by the sound of the turbulent water. Yuexi breathes with mouth wide open.
What is she going to do now? It is almost inaccessible here. There is no sign of anyone living here. Nobody can find her.
Is she going to die here like this?
Her fingers holding tightly onto the rock, her eyes fall on the green shore, her clear eyes dim.
No! I will not die here!
“Help! Is there anyone? Help!” The cry echoes in the valley, and she is not sure if anyone could hear it, but at least she needs to try.
As night falls, Yuexi shouts for a long time and her throat is dry now. Besides, when she falls from the hill, she has exhausted all her strength. Feeling the flowing current no longer that rapid, she moves a little.
At this moment, she senses a beam of light suddenly shining from ashore, which looks like light from a flashlight.
It is a life-saving straw for Yuexi, so she shouts loudly and violently towards that direction, “Help, help!”
Her hoarse voice shouting hard, and then she hears a male voice responding, “Don’t move. I’ll come to save you.”
The man throws the flashlight on the ground. Looking from afar in dark, it seems that he is looking for something on the ground. Then he runs away.
With a frown, she stares toward the shore. Yuexi is now in no mood to think about whether this person is the bad guy who pushed her down, and whether he would leave her behind.
Her only prayer is that the current could slow down, after all, it is better to depend on herself rather than ask for help from others. Although persuading herself this way, she still stares closely at the bank for the sight of that person coming back.
She lives a year in a minute. After a long while, the man finally comes back. There is a long and thick vine in his hand, and the other end is tied to the tree by the river. He moves carefully with the vine in hand, and almost slips several times. Yuexi is waiting anxiously, her heart beating fast.
Finally, the man comes to her side and whispers, “Don’t be afraid, it’s okay.”
He comforts her, at the same time, he stretches out his arm to support her. She stays in the water for too long, perhaps because she is too scared, now she feels her whole body cold and her legs numb.
Fortunately, this is a man by her side, and his wide palm tightly grabs her arm, so that Yuexi would not fall into the water.
They grip the vines hard and with its help, finally get to the shore. Yuexi’s legs weak, when she touches the ground, she collapses and stumbles, and the man quickly comes forward to help her up.
Yuexi waves her hand. She is now lying on the ground, and says weakly, “No need, I want to rest for a while.”
The man walks over to pick up the flashlight and says, “I have never seen such a woman like you. A man and a woman are alone in the wild, and the woman lies on the ground unfenced.”
With a weak laugh, Yuexi exhales deeply, “In front of death, nothing seems important. Besides, now you saved my life, you are a good person. I don’t need to take precautions against you. You are my savior.”
The figure by her side freezes for a moment. Then he turns back, looks at the dark lake, with a curve at the corner of his mouth, saying “You’re an interesting woman.”
Yuexi is so tired that she doesn’t hear what he said. She just wants to lie down and take a rest now.
Not knowing how much time passes, she sits up silently, holding a string of green beads tightly in her hand, which is pulled from the wrist of the person who pushed her down the hill.
In the dim light, she examines the bracelet, the rounded jade beads are of the same size and the uniform texture, which is rare, apparently it is expensive and of top grade.
Her clear eyes tighten slightly, her fingers slowly clenched into a fist.
She had seen this bracelet on Li Ya’s hand!
